Membership categories for individual practitioners
Our membership categories reflect and support the journey you take as a practitioner. At every stage, we offer resources, guidance and encouragement to help you progress through your career.
To find out more about the services we offer to members, please see Benefits of membership.
New applicants, and those returning to BACP, can join us as Student or Individual Members. You can see if you’re eligible and how to apply at How to join BACP, and find out how much it costs in Membership fees. Membership is open to applicants from the UK and overseas.
These are the current categories of membership for individual practitioners:
This is the entry level for those currently taking an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course.
This is the entry level for those who have successfully completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and have started to practise. Individual Members have up to 24 months to progress to the Registered Member MBACP category.
Registered Member MBACP
This is our main category for practising members and represents the minimum recommended standard that a client should expect from a therapist. To become a Registered Member you must have graduated from a BACP accredited course or passed our Certificate of Proficiency, and agree to abide by the Terms and Conditions of the Register.
For further information, see BACP Register.
Registered Member MBACP (Accred)
BACP accreditation is a quality standard for experienced practitioners who can demonstrate their capacity for independent, competent and ethical practice. It shows that we’ve assessed your practice as exceeding our minimum quality standards. Accreditation involves a detailed application and assessment process that takes several months to complete.
For further information, see Accreditation scheme for Individual Practitioners
Registered Member MBACP (Snr Accred)
Senior accreditation recognises a practitioner’s experience, accomplishment and development within their specialist area. We currently have five Senior Accreditation Schemes for individual practitioners and supervisors.
If you are no longer practising but still want to stay in touch with your profession and benefit from our services, you can transfer to the Retired Member category. This is for members who are taking a long career break as well as those who are actually retiring from work. This category is only open to current BACP members, or those whose membership has lapsed within the last three years.
Please contact us for further information or a transfer form.
