About me and my therapy practice

People come to therapy for a number of different reasons and it's important you feel you find the right therapist for you.

Maybe you are fed up with constantly feeling tired, worried, under pressure or thinking no matter what you do you still feel the same? Or maybe you recognise a behaviour or pattern that's holding you back in your career or personal life? Perhaps its affecting your relationships with the people you care most about? Maybe you feel disconnected from who you are?

I get it. And I appreciate how overwhelming it can be to reach out for therapy and begin the process, so thank you for making that first step today.

My name is Denise and I am registered therapist with the BACP. I have been providing people with therapy for many years for various different issues. I have worked with clients facing Unexpected and Traumatic Bereavement, Loss, Infertility, Work Related Stress, Family Issues, Divorce, Anxiety, Worry, ADHD, Depression, OCD, Relationship Issues, Grief and Low Self-Esteem.

I provide a safe and empathic space to work at your pace through the issues affecting you. I offer therapy through video and telephone giving you the flexibility to attend sessions where you feel most comfortable and safe.

I believe you are the expert in your own life and I work in a client centered way. After all you know what feels helpful and not helpful for you. In our sessions together that's what's most important.

I use various tools from a wide range of short term and long term therapy modalities such as Person Centered Therapy ,CBT, Somatic Therapy, Inner Child Work, Trauma Informed Therapy and IFS Informed Therapy to create a personalised toolbox with you to not only manage and eliminate the present symptoms, but also to understand the root causes, repeated patterns and whats needed within in order to heal.

I aim to help you understand and heal wounds from the past that may still be impacting you today to help you live the life you really want.

Practice description

I have a Master's degree in Counselling and provide therapy for a wide range of differing issues including, but not limited to:

Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, Relationships, Bereavement, Facing change, Loss, Worry, OCD, Family issues, Work-related stress, Self Esteem, Infertility and Personal development.

My approach to counselling is that I see each client as unique and needing different things from therapy. I believe therapy should feel safe, at your pace and decisions made collaboratively together. As a pluralistic therapist, I use a range of methods to tailor the therapy to you including CBT, inner child work, person centered, IFS informed therapy and trauma informed therapy.

Together we will work together to respond to and manage the present symptoms in a way that helps you get your life back again.

We start first by creating a toolbox of methods and techniques to not just reduce the symptoms but also to understand what they need from us and why they are there. Once we understand ways to manage and reduce the present symptoms, we can safely start to understand the root causes of these symptoms. I create a safe and non-judgmental space for you to look at these different events, feelings, and traumas to understand how they impacted you then, and what parts of that you may still be carrying with you in the here and now. We do this at a pace that feels safe for you and always with curiosity and compassion.

I have many years’ experience working in counselling through business's in Employee Assistance Programme's (EAP) as well as private therapy work and occupational health.

My first session

In a first session we will explore what brings you to therapy and what you want to get from the sessions. It can be helpful to explore any previous therapy or mental health support and look together at what helped then and what's different about your needs now?

Some clients find it helpful to set goals and discuss what markers tell us we are getting closer to those goals. We can create a personal timeline and look together at the different life events (seemingly small and big) that might be the root of your current symptoms and repeated patterns.

For others, goals can feel too much and instead we can use the space to reflect and work through things directed at your pace and what you need from each session as it comes up.

People all use therapy in different ways for different things and I personally encourage this. These sessions are for you and my role is to facilitate the space you need to uncover the needs of your core self.

Before a first session, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have and I will always be honest and transparent about my expertise and experience. If I feel you may benefit from something outside my scope of expertise I will be happy to signpost you to other services more suitable. However if you have asked anything you may be concerned or curious about and you feel I'm the right therapist for you then we will arrange a time most suitable for our first session and I will ask you to complete a standard therapy contract which outlines my cancellation and payment policies before the first appointment.
