About me and my therapy practice

Rebecca (Bex) Milgate (MBACP)

BA (hons) Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Relationship

www.bexmilgatetherapy.com

I am a neurodivergent (Autistic & Synaesthesia) psychotherapist and psychoeducator working with clients who are neurodivergent, either diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or discovering. I am also a parent to a neurodivergent child and work with parents/carers (either divergent or typical) to support, understand, and enable their neurodivergent children.

My approach:

I provide neurodivergent affirming therapy and insight. Some clients just want an open and non-judgemental space to explore and see where it takes them, others want a little more practical guidance or ideas to help navigate particular difficulties. As well as person-centred; somatic, creative, DBT, and parts of self often appear in my approach.

To give it a name, I would say I work in a pluralistic relational way, tuning into my client’s way of communicating, processing, feeling, and experiencing. Authentic validation and adopting/ flexing to individual support needs.

Practice description

I work purely online, which seems to fit really well with my client's way of being and communication preferences. I use Google Meets, which also has a chat option if you do not use mouth words/non-verbal.

The most important aspects of my practice are transparency and validation. Two key areas in which many neurodivergent have rare experiences of. My aim is always to provide as safe an environment as I possibly can, in order for my clients to uncover and be their authentic selves.

My first session

I offer an informal initial 30 minute online session to 'get to know' each other. During this I can talk a little more about me and my approach, get to know your needs and reasoning for counselling. We can also check if we have any immediate queries with particular emphasis on removing barriers and fears about counselling or psychoeducation.

The next session will open up areas you wish to explore and sets the scene for us to establish a therapeutic relationship that fits you and the way you communicate. My practice is client-led, you bring to the sessions what you need to bring.

Practice description

I work online both in private practice and also with the charity Autistic Parents UK (https://www.autisticparentsuk.org). I work with anyone 16+.

I offer specialised neurodivergent affirming therapeutic support for diagnosed, self-identified, and discovering individuals from around the globe.

The term neuro-affirming or neurodivergent affirming is flung around quite freely by many who don’t recognise its meaning or importance.

For me, as a neurodivergent therapist, I see it as recognising the wondrous intersectionality of individuals, respecting autonomy, and validating differences and lived experience. Part of my aim in therapy is to promote and nurture self-identity and advocacy. For me, as the therapist, to never presume any type of competence, but tune in, adapt and honour all ways of communicating, behavioural needs, and processing.

As well as uncovering and validating the neurodivergent way of being, my clients want to talk and work through an array of different mental health challenges. Trauma often forms a big part of my work.

Sessions:

Sessions are usually 1 hour and take place remotely online, during a time and day that is agreeable to both of us. Some clients do not use mouth words and so a chat option is available.
