About me and my therapy practice
Therapy is often a very important element of our lives. We come to it because life has shaped us in a way that leaves us feeling stuck, or behaving against our own sense of choice and values. Afterwards, we wonder why we are doing what we're doing - trying to fight with shame and confusion, believing the worst of ourselves and our futures.
I therefore have a particular interest in working with clients to help them recognise and address their conditioning and trauma. Often, it is the things that we learned or were told along the way that are problematic - about ourselves, about others and the world - about our past, present and future - about our purpose and our identity.
We believe these things are fixed, and often as a result we are led away from our true selves and our true potential. Often, it is these layers of meaning that are in the way of us seeing and being ourselves. Therapy can help us begin to look beneath them, emerge and thrive.
Through training and practice, I have been exploring and experiencing many different modalities. These are important, but never so much as the bond between therapist and client, and the ability for us to courageously both see and be seen.
However, the language and focus we use matter, so I work with you to decide how and where we move through your world. I therefore work integratively and am very transparent in my way of discussing these things with my clients so that you can have full knowledge and control over the therapy.
All change is a journey, so by working with me, you will be given a space where you are free to bring everything you are, in your own way and in your own time.
Together, we can begin to use this shared space to explore and work towards whatever issues or goals you have in your life - knowing that there is a way to move forwards - towards peace and greater unity.
I have particular experience working with people with autism and other neuro-divergence, as well as with the LGBTQ+ community.
Practice description
The way that I work adapts to the needs and preferences of my clients. However, I do my best to use all the various skills and learnings that I have developed over the course of my training and practice.
I therefore use aspects of humanistic person-centred therapy - where the client's voice and feelings are given space to be expressed and explored, leading to the client's recognition of themselves and the vast resources that they hold.
I also include aspects of Psychodynamic Therapy - where we understand the experiences and conditioning of childhood have had a profound impact on the way we live in the world, and how we view ourselves and others.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) offers us various tools and methods to approach the problems and patterns in our thoughts and behaviours - so that we can see these patterns clearly and come to grips with how to relax and change them.
Parts Theory and Parts Work is also essential to my understanding of the mind/body, and of our patterns. We all have complex internal systems containing many parts competing for attention and dominance. Exploring the purposes and the relationships that underpin these parts and their interactions can help us to take control and gain leadership within ourselves.
Lastly there is my training in hypnotherapy that has taught me that we have often hypnotised ourselves into believing and living according to certain ideas that we have about ourselves, others and our future. Using hypnotherapeutic methods, we can therefore creatively, gently and significantly explore and change these ideas and patterns - using our rich imagination as a source of energy for finding strength, determination and clarity.
All of these combine fluidly to create a rich and effective treatment approach, all of which puts you, the client, at the centre of the work. Together, we can begin to find a path forwards - back towards a life of acceptance, fulfilment and peace.
My first session
Since I offer a free online initial meeting of 30 minutes, we will usually use this space to begin exploring what the problems are that have brought you to therapy.
This means that when we come to our first session, I will have a basic understanding of some elements of your life, and we will usually have at least one focus for the work - and a couple of ideas of how to proceed.
This being said, the initial call and the first session are essential for me to get a deep understanding of who you are and what the various parts of your life are - beginning to get a sense of how it all interacts and moves together, to create the problems that have brought you to therapy. This helps me to negotiate how to approach you, and what will be most effective in terms of working with your presenting problem(s). It also grants me the capacity to navigate your world with respect and integrity - making sure that we are working together towards shared goals and values.
Depending on the problem, I will usually take an approach that seeks to resolve the most immediate problems, those that are in the way of either deeper exploration or deeper change. Therapy is often about working through layers, so it is essential for me to know enough about you to know where this is accepted and wanted, and where it is not. This means that though I begin to work experientially as soon as it feels that we have a safe and trusting relationship, I do my best to never bypass or intrude past what feels safe or wanted to you.
This relationship is fundamental, as therapy invites vulnerability. Therefore, sharing trust and respect will be at the centre of our work - indeed, it is the heart of any sense of stable change that we could achieve together.
Please get in touch if you have any questions, or if you are simply curious about therapy or the way we might work together.
