About me and my therapy practice

As an accredited integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, I have a versatile range of skills and I have helped many people from all walks of life to re-gain their confidence and personal direction following common life experiences; ranging from mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression, living with long term health conditions, or significant life events involving aspects of personal loss, bereavement, grief or trauma and abuse.

I combine different therapeutic theories and approaches, which puts the person I am working with and their related experience at the centre of the therapy process. We work together collaboratively to explore how your lived experiences have impacted on you and your personal choices; targeting things that over time may have gotten in the way of your feeling free to  move forward.

If your time and energy have been called upon by circumstance to support the needs of others, perhaps family members, or in a professional role, you may have noticed over time that your priorities have slowly vanished into the distance, or you may have reached a place of burn out and fatigue.

Therapy can provide an opportunity for you to take time out for yourself, to review your focus and priorities in life, and perhaps reclaim a more balanced perspective, a stronger sense of emotional resilience, or perhaps a space to review how you manage your boundaries with your others, be that your partner, family, friends or work colleagues.

Therapy sessions provide a private and regular time and place to talk about your concerns and how these impact your quality of life. Together we can look at the bigger picture of your life and together unpick aspects of your experiences which have may have contributed to wider issues you are seeking to change or manage differently.

Practice description

At the beginning of therapy I can help you to clarify what you hope to gain from the therapy process. This might be deepening your understanding of yourself, or developing new ways of coping with long established issues.

As a therapist I provide a welcoming, empathic and confidential space for you to bring your concerns or ongoing difficulties. I can support you session by session to explore and reflect upon wider influences in your life, and how these may have impacted your view of who you are, and your established ways of coping with everyday life and relationships.

I generally recommend regular weekly sessions, particularly in the early stage of therapy as I am getting to know a person and their circumstances. I do however work flexibility with individuals at an agreed pace and frequency to suit personal need and availability.

As a person centred therapist I trust in the inherent potential of the individual to learn from experience and find ways to change, or update personal beliefs and expectations of life. As a therapist I respond with empathy, and I am commitment to clear and transparent communications and management of the therapy process.

I have worked previously as a primary care counsellor in the NHS supporting adults to cope effectively with symptoms of anxiety and depression, or struggling to cope with life events such as personal loss, bereavement or childhood trauma.

My first session

I offer a 30 minute initial consultation, free of charge, to chat through what has prompted you to seek therapy. We can set up a time for your initial consultation - which can be by telephone or online at a time which is mutually convenient.

An initial consultation is an opportunity to find out more about the therapy process, and how I might work with you in the context of your current difficulties. Following this session you can then decide if you would like to go ahead and book a first full session with me, or take more time to think further about this as an option.

The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to consider how my way of working may fit with you and your goals for therapy. If following an initial consultation, I believe I don’t have the relevant skills and experience to help you, I will let you know and do my best to refer you to a more suitable therapist, or appropriate local service.
