Why are we reviewing the Articles?

Our Articles of Association are the foundation of how BACP is governed. They set out how decisions are made, where authority sits and how we operate in the interests of our members.

While these Articles have served us well, we’ve not reviewed them for several years. Over that time, some elements have become unclear and outdated. This has limited our ability to act quickly, respond to change, and continue to best support our members in a changing landscape.

The world around us has evolved. Governance standards and member expectations have all moved on and to remain effective and relevant, our governance framework needs to be modern and agile.

What's the review about?

This review is about creating a more responsive, modern organisation by strengthening and updating our governance framework, while staying true to our purpose and the expectations of our members.

We’re not starting from scratch. Instead, we’re building on what already works, refining and improving our Articles so they better serve us and our members, and ensure we are ready for the future.

Why are we doing this now?

This review gives us a positive opportunity to strengthen how we operate and ensure we’re set up for the future.

By updating our Articles, we can:

  • respond more quickly to emerging needs and opportunities
  • work more efficiently and effectively
  • stay aligned with modern governance standards
  • better support and deliver for our members

By acting now, we’re taking a proactive step to ensure our organisation remains resilient, responsive and aligned with best practice.

What will improve?

Through this review, we aim to deliver Articles that are:

  • clearer and easier to understand - so members can confidently navigate how decisions are made
  • more flexible and responsive - enabling timely and effective action
  • aligned with modern standards - reflecting current legal and regulatory expectations
  • future-ready - capable of adapting as the environment continues to change

What it means for members

This work is about strengthening trust, transparency and confidence.

As a member, you can expect:

  • greater clarity on how decisions are made
  • improved transparency around governance
  • confidence that your interests remain protected
  • a stronger organisation better equipped to deliver on its purpose

What happens next?

We’re committed to providing members with the opportunity to be involved in this work.

We don’t want this to be done in isolation and there will be opportunities to collaborate with us, share your thoughts and remain updated via our eBulletin.

Any proposed changes to the Articles will be put to members for a formal vote at our AGM on Friday 20 November.
