Working with grieving children and young people: Beyond the 5 stages

10.50am – 11.35am

An exploration of how to work with children and young people who are grieving, drawing on theories of grief beyond the common Kübler-Ross ‘5 stages’ model (denial, anger, bargaining, depression & acceptance). Using Worden’s four tasks of mourning as a framework, this session will explore creative ways to engage children and young people in sessions where grief work is a focus, including how to adapt to working with different ages and levels of understanding, depending on where they are in their grieving journey, and how to adapt to online working and working with neurodiversity.

This session aims to facilitate an in depth understanding of Worden’s four tasks of mourning, in relation to working with children and young people, and to highlight other theories of grief which support this.

This session aims to provide specific ideas for activities that can be used in sessions with children and young people aged 6+ where grief is a focus, with examples and case studies to facilitate understanding and application.
