To help support a review of our supervision standards we’re looking to build a Supervision Expert Review Panel which will be formed from members who are experts in both supervision training and practice. 

We’re committed to raising the standards of supervision and to recognise and create pathways for members who supervise. We have our Supervision competence framework which sets out the knowledge, skills, abilities and qualities needed for safe, effective and ethical supervision.

As part of our ongoing commitment, we’re reviewing our supervision standards and requirements.  

We acknowledge the importance of counselling and psychotherapy supervision as being ‘…..essential to how practitioners sustain good practice throughout their working life’ (Ethical Framework, 2018, Good practice point 60). 

Ethical Framework 2026

Our new Ethical Framework (2026) further highlights the important role of supervision and the minimum standards that are needed to make sure it is both ethical and effective:

4.3 ‘Have adequate supervision that enables us to reflect in depth about all aspects of our practice

To achieve this, we must ensure that:

  1. we have confirmed with supervisors that they have the necessary qualifications, experience and competence to supervise our work in accordance with the BACP supervision competence framework
  2. regular supervision is undertaken in accordance with BACP membership requirements, the practitioner’s level of experience, training and caseload
  3. supervision is independent of line and case management’

Why are we conducting a review of supervision?

Over the last few years, we’ve received Motion submissions for our AGM asking us to revisit our supervision requirements. We’re aware there are some gaps, and areas of discrepancy and potential confusion across our different membership categories and that it’s been several years since we last reviewed our supervision requirements.

With the launch of our new Ethical Framework this year, it feels timely to undertake a review of our supervision standards. The review will involve looking at all aspects of supervision in terms of our monthly requirements for members at different developmental stages, supervision training and CPD and the development of new supervision accreditation schemes for supervisors and supervision training courses.

This review will help ensure that our supervision standards remain clear, relevant, proportionate and aligned with contemporary counselling and psychotherapy practice.

Supervision Expert Review Panel

To help support this review, we’re creating a Supervision Expert Review Panel (SERP) made up of BACP members who are experts in both supervision training and practice. We’d love to hear from members working across a range of practice settings, modalities, employment contexts and client groups.

What's involved?

As a member of the SERP you’ll be required to attend online meetings (over Microsoft Teams) every 4 to 6 weeks between November 2026 and March 2027. You’ll review and feedback on papers both in advance of meetings and over email.

Your work will be renumerated on a contractual, hourly basis at £71.50 per hour, and we expect the time commitment to be around 4 to 6 hours every month over a 6 month period.
