About me and my therapy practice

I started training as a counsellor over 12 years ago and have years of experience working with people who are striving to understand themselves and these complicated lives that we are all living. I truly believe that we all have the potential to grow and heal and that counselling works to facilitate this process. I offer open-ended integrative counselling with a warm, genuine and non-judgemental attitude in a completely safe space. I am committed to helping you work towards your goals and face what needs to be faced, at your own pace, one session at a time.

Counselling is for everyone. Not just those who may consider themselves to be in an extreme crisis. We are all striving to live our lives in the best possible way but sometimes our environment, our relationships or life events make this difficult or sometimes impossible. We all require extra support at some point in our lives — sometimes you do just need a non-judgemental person to talk to, who can walk alongside you for a little while. Whatever your situation or difficulty, you’ll be warmly welcomed by me.

I have a special interest working with attachment theory and helping people make sense of how they 'show up' in relationships. I also have a passion for working with our individual 'parts' and the inner child as these often hold tightly to past pain and trauma. I will help you meet these parts and make sense of what they are feeling so you can help them unburden themselves of the pain they carry.

I understand that it is vital that you find a counsellor that you really connect with so please do get in touch for a free 20-minute phone consultation. During this session we can talk more about what your hopes and goals are for counselling, what you can expect from a session, how I work and you can decide if you feel we will work well together.

I am a fully qualified counsellor, an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am bound by their ethical framework.

Practice description

I have trained in several different types of counselling because you are unique and I want to be able to tailor my approach to ensure I am working in the way that is best for you. I will take different tools from the following counselling methodologies and use them integratively:-

Person centred counselling

Emotional freedom techniques (also called EFT and tapping)

Internal family systems (IFS)

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

The Rewind Technique for PTSD

Working out doors in nature

Attachment theory

Cold Water exposure and wild swimming

My first session

During our first session we will talk through the paperwork (which will be emailed to you in advance of our first session) covering things such as confidentiality, GDPR and logistics setting the scene for our work together.

We will then gently get to know each other and I will ask you to tell me more about what's bringing you to counselling. My goal is to make this as easy and comfortable a process as possible as I'm very aware that counselling can feel daunting, especially if this is your first experience of it.

About me and my therapy practice

I started training as a counsellor over 12 years ago and have years of experience working with people who are striving to understand themselves and these complicated lives that we are all living. I truly believe that we all have the potential to grow and heal and that counselling works to facilitate this process. I offer open-ended, integrative, outdoor counselling with a warm, genuine and non-judgemental attitude. I am committed to helping you work towards your goals and face what needs to be faced, at your own pace, one session at a time.

Being outdoors offers an opportunity for you to reconnect with both your body and your senses, in a way that opens up new pathways of information that can help you make sense of your current situation. It also allows me to physically and emotionally walk along side you on your journey, helping you feel more supported.

Nature reconnects us with important themes that we may have lost touch with, such as change, life cycles, loss and renewal. It provides an abundance of metaphor and colour and often creates a mirror for what is going on inside you that can help bring awareness, perspective and clarity to your situation in new and unexpected ways.

Some clients find working indoors, facing each other too intense and greatly benefit from the openness of wild spaces where they can expand and take up space. Strong emotions such as anxiety and anger often mean we are too full of energy to sit still for long.

Walking outside and moving our bodies helps regulate us, brings us back into the here and now and away from the ‘what if’s’ where anxiety lives. It both metaphorically and literally grounds us.

Wild swimming is a beautiful compliment to outdoor therapy. There is a growing amount of evidence to suggest that cold water swimming can help to improve mental wellbeing. Immersing the body in cold water boosts dopamine levels and increases the release of endorphins whilst giving you an opportunity to connect to nature and your body. See website.

Practice description

When working outdoors we might walk together, explore one particular area or simply sit in one place side by side. I work in nature in different ways including more simple walk and talk therapy which mirrors indoor counselling work closely. I may also introduce metaphor and use nature to help you express or reflect on what is happening inside you. Sometimes I use rituals such as planting seeds or walking over a threshold to help mark significant changes, goals, new beginnings or endings. If you wish to experience a wild dip we can include that in the therapy experience. Together we’ll find the right way for you to connect with nature.

All the traditional boundaries you would expect in the therapy room will still apply, including a mutually agreed focus for our work and agreements concerning confidentiality. This is so important as we may encounter other people whilst working outside.

You do not need to be super fit or even wildly connected to the outdoors to benefit from this setting for your therapy. There are different options available for how long we walk and dip and each session might feel different for you.

Counselling is for everyone. Not just those who may consider themselves to be in an extreme crisis. We all require extra support at some point in our lives — sometimes you do just need a non-judgemental person to talk to, who can walk alongside you for a little while. I am an Accredited practitioner of Cold Water Therapy and am fully insured.

My first session

During our first session we will talk through the paperwork (which will be emailed to you in advance of our first session) covering things such as confidentiality, GDPR, health and safety and logistics, setting the scene for our work together.

We will then set out on our walk and gently get to know each other. Here you can tell me more about what's bringing you to counselling. You will set the pace and can choose how far you wish to walk. Sometimes you might want to just sit.

My goal is to make this as easy and comfortable a process as possible as I'm very aware that counselling can feel daunting, especially if this is your first experience.

You will need suitable clothes and shoes for sometimes muddy and wet conditions. If you wish to experience a cold water wild dip or swim you will require suitable swimming gear and towel and might enjoy bringing a warm hat to wear in the water. I provide neoprene booties and gloves and a flask of hot tea to enjoy afterwards.

I am a fully qualified person centred counsellor, a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and bound by their ethical framework.
