About me and my therapy practice
Get Back the Life you Deserve!
Hello and Welcome,
Firstly congratulations on finding the courage to take the first step towards seeking help, which is often the most difficult one to make.
I am now also offering Walk and Talk Therapy (adhering to social distancing guidelines).
If somehow you feel ashamed, embarrassed or guilty for not being able to cope right now, maybe it would help to view accessing counselling help as just the ultimate in self care instead. How beneficial it could be to get the help you need before you get to the point of needing to see a doctor. If you're recently bereaved or a loved one passed away a while ago and you don't understand why you're not getting over that loss, why struggle on for any longer feeling alone with your loss. If you have noticed changes in your sleeping patterns, eating habits, level of motivation or loss of libido, these are all signs that something isn't right in your life and your body is trying to tell you to get some help.
A successful counselling relationship is built on mutual honesty, trust and genuineness with you experiencing me as being completely empathetic, congruent and authentic. You bring your own knowledge and experience of yourself and my role is to be alongside you on your journey, valuing you, listening, reflecting, tentatively challenging you which then can provide a fresh perspective on finding a way through the issue/problem you have. I believe that it is our relationships and our experiences within these, from our childhood to the present day that shape and influence who we are.
Whatever your reason for coming to counselling you can expect to receive respect, encouragement, support, understanding and my undivided attention. I view our relationship as sacred and I feel honoured to be who you've chosen to share your story. Give me a ring or e mail me to arrange our first meeting.
I am now offering Walk and Talk Therapy as a safer and healthier alternative to online or telephone counselling. We can have a discussion on the phone before our first walk and talk session. This would be to put in place an agreement between us regarding your preferences on what we would do if either of us saw somebody we knew or our choices if bad weather prevented our planned walk taking place. This would be free of charge.
Research has shown how the benefits of being outdoors surrounded by nature, beauty and tranquility can really help with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Slow to moderate walking releases endorphins which introduces a more positive and enriching shift in your physiology that can lead to feeling more motivated. Motivation can give you a sense of believing that change is possible and that you are capable of making those changes.
Walking side by side, maintaining social distancing, can be a lot less daunting than face to face therapy where being drawn to making eye contact is difficult for you. As a result you will perhaps feel more able to discuss aspects of your story that aren't easy for you to disclose to anyone, maybe even yourself.
However, if you would prefer office, zoom or telephone counselling, I am continuing to offer these, whichever one suits you best.
If you are unfamiliar with zoom, we can discuss it together beforehand and have a trial so you feel able and comfortable to use it ready for our first session. Similarly if telephone counselling is your preferred option we can have a discussion beforehand to clarify and eliminate any worries you may have. Online or telephone therapy can be just as beneficial as in person as its the quality of the connection and relationship built between us that determines the outcome, not the platform used for therapy to take place.
My first session
Our first session together is an opportunity for me to take your basic details and to gently and tentatively ask you what has brought you to seek help at this point in your life. Often on first sessions, it can feel so overwhelming to finally be with the person you know is there just for you, that all the emotions you have been holding onto for so long, just pour out without you being able to control them. This is not something to worry about or be ashamed of in any way but quite a normal thing to happen. It is the start of you beginning to unburden yourself, peel away the layers and make more sense of exactly what is causing you to feel distressed. It is up to you to decide if you feel comfortable enough to continue with our sessions with no pressure from me at all. My aim solely being to join you if you so wish on your own unique experience of working towards your better future, fulfilment and quality of life.
