About me and my therapy practice
Get Back the Life you Deserve!
Hello and Welcome,
Firstly congratulations on finding the courage to take the first step towards seeking help. Especially now, coping with your feelings through this pandemic too, an added stress making it even more important to get the help you need. Your feelings do matter to me. Far from being evidence of weakness that you are seeking help but in fact it is evidence of how courageous you are, being willing to face up to your problems and deal with them in the best way you can and find a better way forward for yourself.
If you feel ashamed or embarrassed for not being able to cope right now, ask yourself what would you think of a friend who came to you saying they are not coping...you would not think any less of them. Deep rooted negative self beliefs that maybe keep you stuck in believing you are a bad person, unworthy of love or good things happening in your life and stop you from feeling able to deal with life`s challenges in the way you would want to. If you have noticed changes in your sleeping patterns, eating habits, level of motivation or loss of libido, these are all signs that something isn't right in your life. Maybe you are aware of suppressing unresolved feelings from previous trauma that you no longer feel able to contain. Please don`t suffer alone for any longer than you already have.
A successful counselling relationship is built on mutual honesty, trust and genuineness with you experiencing me as being completely empathetic, congruent and authentic. My role is to be alongside you on your journey, valuing you, listening, reflecting, tentatively challenging you which then can provide a fresh perspective on finding a way through the issue/problem you have.
Whatever your reason for coming to counselling you can expect to receive respect, encouragement, support, compassion, understanding and my undivided attention.
I am now offering Walk and Talk Therapy as an alternative to online or telephone counselling. I am also now able to resume face to face office therapy. Whatever your preference is, I am happy to answer any questions you may have before deciding which environment would suit you best.
Research has shown how the benefits of being outdoors surrounded by nature, beauty and tranquility can really help with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Slow to moderate walking releases endorphins which introduces a more positive and enriching shift in your physiology that can lead to feeling more motivated. Motivation can give you a sense of believing that change is possible and that you are more capable of making those changes.
Walking side by side can be a lot less daunting for some than face to face therapy where the eye lock pressure is too difficult. As a result you will perhaps feel more able and free to discuss aspects of your story that aren't easy for you to disclose when motionless.
If you are unfamiliar with zoom, we can discuss it together beforehand and have a trial so you feel able and comfortable to use it ready for our first session. Similarly if telephone counselling is your preferred option we can have a discussion beforehand to clarify and eliminate any worries you may have. Online or telephone therapy can be just as beneficial as in person as its the quality of the connection and the level of safety you experience as well as the relationship built between us that determines the outcome and not the platform used. This is of course a very individual thing as after all, no one size fits all!
My first session
Our first session together is an opportunity for me to take your basic details and to gently and tentatively ask you what has brought you to seek help at this point in your life. Often on first sessions, it can feel so overwhelming to finally be with the person you know is there just for you, that all the emotions you have been holding onto for so long, just pour out without you being able to control them. This is not something to worry about or be ashamed of in any way but quite a normal thing to happen. It is the start of you beginning to unburden yourself, peel away the layers and make more sense of exactly what is causing you to feel distressed. It is up to you to decide if you feel comfortable enough to continue with our sessions with no pressure from me at all. My aim solely being to join you if you so wish on your own unique experience of working towards your better future, fulfilment and quality of life.
