About me and my therapy practice

I use a relational humanistic approach in my counselling practice based on Transactional Analysis. This is supported by my background of 30 years as a specialist NMC registered nurse in the context of critical and intensive care (ICU) practice. I am a Academic Fellow of HE in the context of providing health related education in undergraduate nursing programs - Adult and Mental Health branches of nursing. My additional professional experiences compliment my frame of reference in support my client work as a counsellor.

I work from a central point of reference that respects and values the client's choices and within the BACP ethic framework.  My emphasis is on valuing the client’s autonomy as the central focus.

Practice description

I work with clients who have come to counselling for a variety of reasons. This includes bereavement, anxiety and relationship problems as well as those seeking support to resolve or manage long term issues that have led to psychological distress.

I work with students in training under taking personal therapy, as part of their professional development. I also work with clients that have long term health concerns. This includes women managing the challenges of menopause, or a life limiting illness such as cancer or COPD, through to more specialist health circumstances e.g.,  individuals suffering from the physical and psychological trauma of having been a patient or relative to a patient in Intensive Care.

I utilise creative means in the counselling session when this compliments the work that may be taking place. This can help support expression of feelings in an representative image or object, whilst these are acknowledged, understood and worked with in the counselling process.

I have gained experience in counselling from a range of settings including a womens service supporting those who have experienced abuse - sexual, psychological or violence as well as CAMHS and a GP practice setting. All these experiences support my counselling practice and the work that I do with clients.

My first session

The first session will be orientated around making contact with you and beginning  the process of looking at what has brought you to counselling. I undertake an assessment process with each client that takes account of the impact of their situation on their physical and physiological health.

We will also discuss the practical and contractual issues of counselling such as arranging sessions, working safely and payments for sessions where this applies.

The first session is also your opportunity to see if you feel comfortable with me as your therapist and to ask any questions.
