About me and my therapy practice

I'm Lorraine at CANDLEMOUSE COUNSELLING.

Working as a humanistic counsellor with  five years’ experience of face-to-face counselling and the last two years working online and over the telephone during Covid 19.

I am  a fully registered member of the BACP, currently working towards accreditation. Separate to this, a qualified BAST sound practitioner and senior NHS staff member working in the world of hearing loss and deaf culture 25 Years +.

I have many transferable skills which enable me to work with people from all walks of life and hold a Holistic view of the world which later led me into counselling.

I hold true that humans have one basic motive, that is the tendency to self-actualize – i.e. to fulfill one’s potential and achieve the highest level of ‘human-beingness’ we can (Rogers 1959).

My grounding is the Person centred approach based on providing an environment of warmth and safety, free from threat, judgement or criticism

I offer an honest compassionate space and aim to actively help you make sense of the world and how you came to be in this situation in the first place.

I have experience working with adversity in life, distress, and the sudden outpouring of strong emotions; working with grief and loss, unexpected life transitions, baby loss and people diagnosed with and living with Cancer.

Work with adults, elders occasionally  young people aged 16+. I do not work with couples.

Practice description

I offer a blended approach for those people who find it problematic in any way to access appointments face to face. Online working seems the natural transition from not being in the room together and telephone counselling gives further opportunity to meet together in a completely different space, to hone listening skills and truly be present to hear and feel what is being said. Both are as rich as any face to face working and offered to my clients.

People come to counselling for numerous reasons but it is hugely personal and an individual process. It may be looking for support with a specific issue, difficult life events, relationship problems, upsetting or traumatic events or difficultly managing emotions such as grief, guilt, sadness, confusion, anger or low self-esteem. Be it a feeling or lack of wellbeing, sense of loneliness, depression and anxiety or other mental health problems or long term physical health problems. It can leave a sense of lacking purpose and fulfillment in life, low self-worth or not belonging.

It is essential to find the right person with whom you can start to trust, research (Lamberts Pie) highlights the success of any talking therapy often linked not to the type of therapy but to the therapist and how likely you are to trust the person you work with. This is about the therapeutic relationship and building a strong alliance together.

I work with people of all stages of counselling, from those who have never tried counselling before to those newly training or searching for a different type of therapy or counsellor. The most important thing is for it to feel right, to help you make the most of your counselling journey and see it as a positive experience.

My first session

I offer a free initial phone consultation during which you can let me know what you are looking for and together we can work out if I will be a good match for you.

Session’s cost £50 for 50 minutes (Counselling hour) Some concessions available as I offer a sliding scale if the person struggles to meet the full cost. Please let me know when getting in touch if concessions are something we need to consider as these are only offered on an individual basis. I can signpost you to another counsellor or service offering a more reduced rate if concessionary spaces are full or I am unable to subsidize the full fee.

You can contact me by phone, text or email and all enquiries are very warmly received. Replies will be sent within 48 hours
