About me and my therapy practiceAs a counsellor I aim to provide an open and safe space for my clients to explore their issues, with clear boundaries and a collaborative personalised approach to ensure I am meeting their individual needs.
My training encompassed both psychodynamic and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) approaches to counselling practice, providing a unique combination. CBT provides practical techniques and strategies to deal with current symptoms, for example associated with anxiety and/or depression. The psychodynamic perspective pays greater attention to wider and potentially more deep-seated issues which may warrant exploration. These approaches are explained fully to clients, with mutual decision-making regarding goals and expectations agreed at every stage of the counselling process.
My interest in training as a counsellor began when I volunteered with Cruse, as a Bereavement Support Volunteer, working with both adults and young people; grief continues to be an area of interest. I am keen to help clients understand how they can learn to manage their current situation, finding strategies and ways of coping that suit them. Reaching an understanding and acceptance of the origins or development of their issues is also an important part of therapy, and my aim is to provide a supportive space within which to explore.
For many people, considering counselling can be a daunting and uncertain turning point in their lives; for others it may be an accepted and familiar strategy which has been helpful in the past. In either circumstance the ‘fit’ between counsellor and client is an essential component of the relationship.
