About me and my therapy practice
I am a BACP Accredited Integrative Psychotherapist, with 24 years’ experience, having worked in frontline NHS services (Hospitals and GP surgeries) and in private practice. The three issues I have become most proficient in are anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties.
I chose to train in several approaches, because no one theory is in fact more effective than the others. Because I meet people who differ greatly in cultural backgrounds, life stages, belief and value systems, it is useful to have a versatile tool kit, so I can adapt to my Clients' way of thinking, rather than impose a rigid technique.
I read a lot and do my best to attend the most pre-eminent conferences in my field, but I have also become militant about factoring in time for self-care. I urge my Clients to do the same.
I watch as we all become more and more dependent on electronic devices that force-feed our brains with messages and visuals that are doctored to manipulate and pressurise us into liking certain things and being a certain way. Our virtual "friends” have more importance and kudos than our real ones. We don't have time to connect to our senses, breathe and regulate our feelings, reflect and make intuitive choices, or sleep enough to regenerate. We are more bound to our computers and our phones than to each other.
Of course our anxiety is rocketing and our relationships are suffering. And we fall into bad habits to compensate. Because we have to cope and keep going in the madness of it all.
If you come to me you will be welcomed into a calm and comforting confidential space, where we will rediscover your inner power and harness it to face the battle ahead. You will learn how to become more resilient and adaptive. And hopefully you will emerge as the victor in your life, rather than the victim.
I see Clients in my study at home. It is basically full of books and plants - two of my favourite things. In winter we put the fire on, and in summer we open the window to the sunny garden. It is a safe, confidential and private space which I enjoy sharing with other humans.
My first session
My first session is an assessment - of you - and me - to see if we are compatible and happy to work with each other.
After years of experience, I have formulated my own assessment protocol - a series of questions, which will give me a good idea of who you are and what you need from therapy.
Of course the space is always open to feedback and your own questions. I am very much myself in sessions. I do not put on a mask or act differently from the person I am day in day out in daily life. You will know straight away if I am right for you.
