Practice description

In my early career I worked as a Primary and Secondary schoolteacher and later as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language. In the late 1990s I was teaching English to overseas students at Lewes Tertiary College, where I also had a role providing pastoral care. It was this that initially prompted me to seek qualifications in counselling. I obtained a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling at Sussex University in 2001 and have since practised in a number of different settings. As well as maintaining my private practice, I was on the Approved Panel of Counsellors' of East Sussex County Council from 2006 to 2012. From 2007 to 2011, I worked part-time as a volunteer councillor at CRI, a charity dedicated to providing drug and alcohol support in Brighton. I also worked as a volunteer counsellor at Aspire, Brighton, between 2013 and 2016, a charity that supports people with Asperger's. I am currently seeing private clients, and also take referrals from Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs). My initial training was in Psychodynamic Counselling, which emphasises the in-depth therapeutic relationship jointly created by the therapist and the client. Within this framework, I adopt a range of strategies and techniques to help you find better ways to cope and to help bring about changes in the way you address the issues you face. My approach is to help you gain insight and self-awareness. In addition to this, I will also introduce you, where appropriate, to approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and the practice of Mindfulness which you can use in your own time. I work with individuals and couples and people of all ages, and have extensive experience of a wide range of issues. I tailor my approach to you and the issues you are dealing with in a supportive and empathetic way. I adhere to the BACP Ethical Guidelines, and preserve strict confidentiality.
