With 25 years experience as a BACP Senior Accredited therapist I work with adults and specialise in counselling young people. I offer you support with issues such as Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Family issues, Bereavement & Stress. Walk and Talk and Telephone sessions available at flexible times.

I am a registered BUPA  therapist in addition to other medical insurers. My  accreditation by BACP has been  continuous since 2003.

My expertise in counselling young people aged between 12-19  years and university students has been informed by 24 years experience in sixth form colleges, universities and further education. I have attended many training events specific to young people. Flexible sessions to fit academic commitments.

Whether you are an adult or young person I offer further specialisms in Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Stress, Panic Disorder, Low self esteem and self harm.

I provide counselling for trainee counsellors on Diploma, Degree, Masters or PhD level courses (I offer contracts to fit you academic needs).

Other issues I can help you with include Separation/Divorce, Anger, Exam Stress, Suicidal thoughts. See section below for a definitive list of issues.

I also offer Walk and Talk therapy please see separate Godalming Area profile for details of this approach.

The reason you are seeking counselling may not be in relation to any specific issue. You may want a safe and confidential space to explore your feelings and thoughts or seek to grow as a person. It is my wish that our counselling sessions together can help you understand yourself better and provide greater insight and awareness of your presenting issues and life experience.

Supervision

Since 2009 I have practised as a qualified Supervisor of both experienced and trainee counsellors (see my supervision profile).

I have lectured on counselling courses for over 20 years.

Practice description

I offer a free initial 20 minute telephone consultation to discuss working together.

My sessions are once a week and usually 50 minutes in duration. This is the same for sessions on the phone, walk and talk and video link. Please also see the section on how I am working during the Coronavirus pandemic.

My Person Centred/Integrative approach to counselling

As a Person Centred practitioner i believe that you the client are at the heart of the counselling process, with the autonomy for you to choose the issues and concerns you wish to focus upon and the pace you wish to work at. I work alongside you in a therapeutic relationship built around equality and trust. I am open and honest in relation to all aspects of my client work.

I offer you a safe, confidential environment, free from judgement, where I seek to communicate my understanding of your concerns in a deeply empathic way.

As research consistently suggests, the quality of the relationship is the most significant factor for clients reflecting upon how counselling helped them.

Other approaches I integrate into my work

I sometimes integrate other approaches to enhance our work together.  I draw upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in my work with anxiety and depression and Psychodynamic ways of thinking where appropriate.

I have also trained in Person Centred Art Therapy (please ask if you wish to use art materials in our sessions together if you feel it would be beneficial to you).

Exam Stress

I have extensive experience of working effectively with young people coping with exam stress and anxiety. I integrate an established CBT model to improve a young person’s ability to prepare for and sit their exams. Most of my work with exam stress has been with A level and GCSE students.

My first session

Our first session together is very important in relation to establishing how we both wish to contract and set the boundaries for our working therapeutic relationship.

This will most likely be the first time we have met or spoken with each other so I give time for us to introduce ourselves. The strictest confidentiality is of utmost importance i explain with honesty any limits to confidentiality which all counsellors have to abide to. Essentially the confidentiality I offer is similar to that of your doctor.

In this first session we also look at what you would like to achieve in our relationship and what issues have brought you to counselling. This session is also a time for you to ask me any questions in relation to how I work, the therapeutic model I use, and to finalise payment details.

About me and my therapy practice

Walk and Talk Therapy

With 25 years experience as a BACP Senior Accredited therapist I work with adults and specialise in counselling young people. This profile introduces how i practice as a Walk and Talk therapist.  Please visit my main Godalming profile if you are not seeking this form of therapy.

What is Walk and Talk Therapy

It is a form of counselling/psychotherapy where confidential sessions take place outside with counsellor and client walking side by side. It is also referred to as Ecotherapy, Walking Therapy or Outdoor Therapy. The pace is always set by the client with the counsellor matching their pace. If the client wishes to pause or sit they are free to do so.

The primary objective of Walk and Talk is to have a therapy session. However walking in the fresh air in a natural environment provides an additional therapeutic context. I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework and observe the same rules of confidentiality as traditional face to face counselling settings.

I offer you support with issues such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Depression/low mood, Bereavement & Stress.

The Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy

Walk and Talk combines the health benefits of walking outside with the psychological benefits of talking to a trained therapist. It has been shown to lower levels of anxiety, stress and depression in addition to enhancing a sense of well being.

Bereaved clients  find being outside in the changing seasons helpful while working through the stages of grief following the loss of a loved one. Walking relieves tension and stimulates blood flow to the brain improving problem solving and creative thinking.

The natural environment, weather and objects encountered on the walk can be used symbolically and metaphorically as part of the therapy.

Practice description

How I work, my therapeutic approach to Walking Therapy

My sessions are once a week and usually 50 minutes in duration, the same as face to face and phone sessions.

I am a Person Centred practitioner. The approach believes that you the client are central the counselling process. Person Centred counselling is an excellent fit with Walk &Talk Therapy due to it's ethos of shared responsibility, equality and co -operation. I am open and honest in relation to all aspects of my work with you.

Whilst waIking I offer you a safe and confidential environment free from judgement. I strive to communicate my understanding of your concerns in an empathic manner. You can choose the issues you wish to focus upon and the pace we work at.

Some differences between Walking Therapy and Room based counselling.

For some people talking about difficult issues face to face with a counsellor can be daunting. Walk and Talk therapy with the counsellor and client walking side by side can feel less intense and inhibiting. Silences can also feel less intense due to the forward motion of walking and without the awkwardness of face to face counselling.

In Walk and Talk the counsellor does not impart the same control over the therapeutic space. There is shared ownership of the natural environment and counselling process.

Why some people choose Walk and Talk

People often choose this form of therapy if their job is sedentary. Walk and Talk presents for some an alternative option to another chair based situation.

Parents with small babies appreciate the accessibility of Walk and Talk where a sleeping baby in a buggy can be accommodated in a less distracting way than in the counselling room.

My first session

We can set a time and place for the first session over the phone as I offer a free 20 min initial consultation. Please feel free to ring me.

Walk and Talk boundaries and Confidentiality

The first session is very important and is always carried out face to face, most typically by meeting in my counselling room. This is to set the boundaries and discuss how Walk & Talk can best help you as everyone has different reasons for choosing it and what they wish to achieve from it.

We discuss and co- construct a confidentiality agreement including, how to negotiate the rare chance of encountering someone on the walk one of us might know. The strictest confidentiality is of utmost importance. I explain with honesty any limits to confidentiality which all counsellors have to abide to. Essentially the confidentiality I offer is similar to that of your doctor.

We can also co – construct an agreement around what happens in very extreme weather, for example, a phone or online session instead. In normal circumstances it is your call if the weather is too bad.

This session is also a time for you to ask me any questions in relation to how I work, the therapeutic model I use, and to finalise payment details

Location of Walk and Talk sessions

The first session is where we discuss the location and routes for our Walk and Talk sessions.

I am lucky enough to live and practice in Godalming which is surrounded by beautiful countryside accessible on foot from the town centre in a few minutes.

There are many river walks, meadows and parks  where Walk and Talk can take place. I live close to Winkworth Arboretum offering another location, where there is also a car park available.

I also offer Walk and Talk sessions in Guildford where there are many scenic locations that are also easily accessible..
