About me and my therapy practice

Hello. I'm Dean, from London. I am a qualified, BACP registered counsellor, offering individual counselling to adults on a short, medium and long-term basis. I am based in two locations in London: Dalston in Hackney, and Old Street in Islington. I also offer remote counselling sessions, both online (video call) and on the phone.

Starting counselling might bring up all kinds of feelings for you. My aim is to allow you, the client, the space and time to feel supported, safe and able to express what is troubling you. You may have a specific issue you want to talk about, or it might be a general sense of feeling anxious, uneasy or stuck. Perhaps something is not right that you can't quite put your finger on. You might not know what you want out of counselling. Maybe you would simply like to take the time and space to talk and to connect more with yourself, or maybe you have something you want to get off your chest. The counselling I provide is an accepting space for you to talk about anything you want to bring.

Practice description

I am a humanistic counsellor, having trained in Existential and Gestalt therapy, while also drawing on elements of Person-centred therapy. I first took a therapy training course in 2004, and I now combine different elements of these approaches. I believe that we all act and re-act in relation to our environment and that we make sense of ourselves and of the world by using all parts of ourselves: by thinking, feeling and living in our body, to form our unique, personal experience. I also believe that given enough support (in the form of love, closeness and feeling understood), we all have the capacity to learn, grow, and become more fulfilled.

My first session

The initial session is your opportunity to explore what has brought you to counselling, and for you to voice any hopes, concerns, or expectations you might have. It might be the first time you have had counselling, or perhaps you have been before. There is no right way or wrong way to approach counselling - I am interested to hear your unique experience, and to work with whatever you bring. Our first session is also the chance for both of us to see if we would like to work together, and to get to know each other. You can ask me any questions you might have and I am more than happy to let you know my way of working.

I believe that counselling is most effective when we are able to build a trusting, respectful relationship and when my clients feel able to be themselves. My clients often report that they feel relieved to have begun.

Please get in touch with a phone call or an email, and I will respond the same day, or within 24 hours. We can arrange an initial session via text or email. Or, we can talk on the phone first, to see if I can provide you with support that could be useful for you, where you can also, if you want to, give me an idea of your current situation and what has brought you to counselling.
