About me and my therapy practice

My name is John and I am a practising counsellor based in Clapham, Holborn and Islington, London. I also do online therapy. I am committed to providing counselling and talking therapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. I work with individuals using an open-ended approach or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

I do not see myself as an expert, you are the expert on you; rather I see myself as a skilled helper in your journey.

I understand that seeking out therapy can be a difficult decision for some, but I firmly believe that when an individual makes that step, it is because they are ready for change and growth. Using my training, we will work towards a better awareness of yourself and a better awareness of yourself in relation to others.

My approach is integrative, meaning that I draw on and integrate the training I have had in modalities such as humanistic, psychodynamic, and therapeutic relational theories and applications. I tend to lean towards Psychodynamic, Kleinian and Berne.

But I do not believe that one modality fits all; the human mind is far too complex for one theory or modality to assist and explain all of us.

Current study: MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of London (UoL).

Practice description

At the centre of my practice is the cultivation of a secure, safe, and confidential therapeutic environment and relationship. This is key to building a strong therapeutic alliance with clients; it is the bedrock of therapeutic progress, and it must always be a harmless co-created space between therapist and client.

This safe space allows the client to look at perhaps a different way of being; a different way of reacting; to reveal a different narrative than the one that has perhaps caused hurt, pain and that general feeling of being stuck.

My first session

We will have had a telephone call before our first session to get a feel for if we want to work together. We'll identify and date/time for weekly sessions. I'll take the first session payment over the telephone or send you a payment link. That first session payment also secures the selected slot in my diary.

Then the first sessions are concerned with you telling me your story in as much detail as you want to tell. Depending on what you bring to the session we can then decide together some goals, maybe what you want to focus on at first and we'll take it from there.

Types of therapy

CBT, Emotionally focused therapy, Integrative, Psychodynamic, Relational, Solution focused brief therapy

Clients I work with

Adults

How I deliver therapy

Long-term face-to-face work, Online counselling, Short-term face-to-face work, Time-limited
