About me and my therapy practice

My training and practice are psychodynamic psychotherapy and therapeutic counselling,  an approach which offer ways of understanding ourselves and others in our lives.  Psychodynamic therapy is based on the theories and practice of analytical psychology and has a long and respected history going back to Freud and Jung.

People tend to view the world around them through the template of their own early experience, sometimes repeating responses from the past which no longer work well in the present.   Through a process of exploring thoughts and feelings, memories and dreams, psychodynamic therapy  helps people to become more self aware, with increased self confidence and self esteem, and to resolve their worries and conflicts.  I feel that an important part of therapy is helping people to discover their own inner strength and resiliance, to that they can make necessary changes, thus facilitating a  move to a better future and happiness.

Practice description

I offer both short term solution focused therapy of 6 to 12 sessions, and longer term therapy in which we explore different issues over a period of time.

Therapy can help with difficulties and emotional stress caused by loss, relationship breakdown and other disruptive life events.  Talking with a therapist can help you understand how past experiences, worry about the future or lack of self confidence may be affecting your life in the present, leaving one feeling distressed, isolated, helpless or burdened.

My practice offers a safe confidential space in which to explore thoughts and feelings and aims to allow clients to make their own choices.  When an individual is offered appropriate resources their capacity for recovery is greatly increased.  A sense of purpose, motivation and self belief returns.  Counselling with an experienced impartial professional therapist can help to provide insight into difficulties and help you deal with them and move on to enjoy your life.

My first session

The first session is always an assessment which usually takes a little longer than the weekly sessions of 50 minutes.  I allow up to an hour and a half for the first session and my assessment fee is £75:00 for assessment and £55:00 for weekly sessions.

The assessment is a opportunity for the client to decide if they would feel comfortable working with me, and for me to assess if therapy is the right way forward at this moment.  Sometimes a referral might be more appropriate, for instance to addiction services or to mental health or GP services.

There is a small amount of paperwork at assessment such as Data Protection; Working Agreement; GP consent, but most of the time is there for my client to tell me about themselves and what has bought them to counselling at this time in their lives.
