About me and my therapy practice

I have over 26 years experience in both Private Practice and in specialised counselling organisations. My training in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy (TA) helps you to see patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving within relationships and how to break these and learn new ways to be.

Experience

I have 10 years experience as a Student Counsellor in Higher Education across 3 Universities.

13 years experience as a Counsellor in substance misuse ( drugs and alcohol mainly but also many other forms of addiction).

20 years as a Sight Loss Counsellor.

15 years as Lead Sexual Health Counsellor.

Over 10 years in Private Practice.

A little about me and how I work

I have learned over the many years I have been seeing clients that the most important part of your therapy journey is for me to be real and authentic, to listen and create space for you to feel at ease to talk and explore what is troubling you and for you to feel confident I will not judge, will not try and fix and will empathise even if your experience is different to mine.

I have spent the last 8 years practicing meditation attending classes in person and weekend retreats.

I also read regularly and follow podcasts and talks by many authors and teachers such as:-

Tara Brach

Jack Kornfield

Brene Brown

Eckhart Tolle

David Michie

It is possible to weave a brief guided meditation into sessions if this is of interest and this can help to settle the mind.

The ‘busy ness’ of the mind is so often the cause for many issues we face such as anxiety, stress, worry, sleeplessness, work issues, relationship issues and quite simply how we each view and experience life.

By focussing on acknowledging our thoughts as simply thoughts, learning to let them pass through and pay them less attention, we can find a way to feel the peace and happiness we are all searching for.

I continue regularly to attend workshops, training courses , conferences and events to keep my knowledge up to date and current in this ever changing and growing field of therapy.

Practice description

What to expect

As everyone wants something different from their therapy I am always open and flexible to whatever you bring to a session.

I allow you to lead with whatever is foremost in your life on the day of your session.  You can work as slowly or as deeply as you choose.  You are in control and I do not lead you, steer you or have all the answers to your issues.

I will however help guide you to finding out what it is that you question and what has brought you to therapy at this time.

Sessions

I offer online sessions using various different platforms such as Skype, Teams and FaceTime.

I can offer telephone sessions once a relationship has been established  and we have either met in person or online.

I also see clients in person in a calm, quiet, peaceful countryside location midway between Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland.

The space is dedicated and private and if you are agreeable my lovely therapy cat may often join us.

I also offer Outdoor Therapy sessions walking and talking in quiet countryside surrounded by fields, sheep and horses offering an alternative tranquil setting to sitting indoors in my therapy space.

All sessions are 55 minutes.

Outdoor sessions can be longer and can be discussed.

My first session

I offer a brief and free initial consultation lasting around 20 minutes to all new client enquiries.

This is an opportunity to both meet before any commitment is made to book your first  session and for me to assess if I may have the experience and background to help you with the particular issues you are facing.

This is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you may have.

If you then decide to book your fist therapy session with me I will email you a contract  which will explain confidentiality and it’s limitations, payment policy and cancelation policy.

My privacy notice will also be emailed for you to read and accept before your first session. This will explain how I keep data, for how long and the way it is stored.

I will also send bank details for payment to be made in advance and on the same day you book your session. This is to secure the session and it cannot then be booked by anyone else.

Once payment is received if you are coming to see me in person, I will then give you my full address.

If we are having online sessions we will discuss which platform we will be using and agree to an alternative means to have the session if WiFi or data issues fail. This will usually be a telephone session.
