About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified, accredited and experienced Psychodynamic Counsellor, with over 20 years experience of working therapeutically with clients from a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

I have been working therapeutically with adults, children, young people and young adults for over 20 years. I have worked in a variety of voluntary agencies, such as PACE (LGBTQ+ charity) and Brook Young People’s Services. I have also spent many years working in counselling and senior counsellor/manager roles in university settings. The settings I have worked in have meant I have been able to work with people from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, sexualities and gender identities, and, more recently, neurodiversities.

- I am committed to my work, and care deeply about people, their wellbeing and place in the world.

- I am a member of Climate Psychology Alliance and am passionate about social and environmental justice.

- I am also a musician, and have a strong sense that there can be resonance and harmony between our emotional and creative selves.

- Qualified (Birkbeck University of London) with MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling with Children & Adolescents (2006, Distinction)

- Accredited with BACP since 2008 (MBACP Accred) and work according to BACP Ethical Framework

Practice description

I would very much encourage finding the right person for you, and our introductory session would have this in mind, as well as an opportunity to think about what is most helpful at this time.

My core approach is psychodynamic - this means, at least to some extent, considering the impact of early years and experience on our present sense of ourselves in the world, and our relationships with others. Whether we can consciously remember our past and how it might have impacted us, or perhaps find ourselves repeating patterns or finding ourselves in situations that feel familiar, yet confusing, painful and frustrating.

I also believe we must take into account the context and setting for these early relationships, and, if helpful, to consider the intergenerational and systemic.

Although this is the core of my approach, there is flexibility and I will always try to work with what you need from our sessions.

We can think together about where you are now, the impact of your journey so far and how this has been navigated, the strengths, beliefs and values that have served you well, as well as the patterns, narratives and expectations of yourself and others that may be causing pain, and creating a sense of difficulty and stuckness.

I am conscious of how difficult it can be to start talking openly, and my aim is to establish a a safe, creative connection – so that what has perhaps previously been unspoken can be shared, processed and understood together.

We might agree an initial contract of short term, focused work (6 - 12 sessions) -  or long term/open ended sessions with opportunities to review. It is usually most beneficial to meet weekly but we can discuss this together.

My first session

I can offer a free, 15 minute introductory consultation on the telephone/online so that we can think together about what you are looking for, how we might work together, and whether you would like to meet for a first session. You can ask questions during this consultation, or in advance of it via email/enquiry form if that is more helpful.

About me and my therapy practice

A qualified, accredited and experienced counsellor, manager and supervisor.

My roots are in the psychodynamic approach, having qualified with a Masters in Psychodynamic Counselling in 2006 (Birkbeck) However I will draw from other approaches and learnings, if appropriate, and always work with the client/supervisee in front of me.

I have over 20 years experience of working therapeutically with a diverse range of clients, including young people, young adults, children, families, and often with clients who might otherwise be unable to afford personal therapy.

I have extensive experience in therapeutic and managerial roles in higher education settings. Prior to this, I worked in voluntary agencies such as Brook Young People's Services and PACE (an LGBTQ+ charity)

I believe passionately in social and environmental justice, and these values will inform my work.
