About me and my therapy practice

Teresa Raven MBACP Registered & Accredited Counsellor & EMDR Services.

I am working online, by video or by telephone. I also offer trauma treatment: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) by video.

I can help you to build a sense of emotional resilience and emotional regulation. So, when you feel overwhelmed, you will have skills and knowledge to help you to think, behave and respond in ways that are more grounded.

I use my training and skills from over 14 years of experience, to support you to understand your difficulties and to make changes to live a more fulfilling life.

My aim is to help you to resolve a wide range of problems, including trauma, depression, anxiety disorders, stress, low self-esteem, low confidence, loss of purpose, work-based stress, bullying, health problems, disordered eating, relationship difficulties, bereavement, childhood abuse, sexual abuse, social anxiety, health anxiety, death anxiety, panic, and excessive worrying.

Practice description

I qualified in 2007 with a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling from the University of Hertfordshire. I integrate psychodynamic, compassion-focused therapy and person-centred theories to inform my understanding of your difficulties. This means, I often look back at your past to key relationships, attachment figures and core self-beliefs as we are often reacting in the present, from things that have affected us in the past.  I work with warmth, compassion and offer a non-judgemental space where you can explore your difficulties carefully. We work together to formulate a plan for therapy to to meet your goals.

I am interested in the symptoms of trauma as these can be overwhelming. I completed training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2019 and have a lot of experience working with trauma. I use EMDR regularly and EMDR is a recognised treatment for trauma and its symptoms: nightmares, avoidance, intrusive thoughts, irritability, low mood, anxiety etc. In very basic terms, EMDR can help to desensitise the overwhelm, flashbacks etc and you no longer have the emotional charge to the memory. You know the  trauma happened, but it is a memory in your mind, stored where it needs to be - in the past. This supports you to live in the present.

I also use Mindfulness and completed a Mindfulness for Stress Reduction course in 2013.

I was awarded a certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in 2005.

I have a First Class Honours Degree in Psychology (2002) and provide psycho-education to help you to your symptoms and then build strategies to help you manage them.

I work with compassion and understanding. I help you to build a sense of emotional resilience.

I also provide counselling for Employment Assistance Programmes and, for BUPA, Aviva, WPA, ComPsych and AXA.

My first session

In the first session I will help you to feel settled and at ease. I will give you information about confidentiality and I risk assess to help decide if online work is suitable.

We can talk about what brought you to therapy and, about what you would like to gain from counselling. I can also explain how EMDR could help. You can ask lots of questions. We start to build a working relationship and this is the start of the therapy.

I can also support you by teaching  exercises to start to manage any symptoms or, emotional overwhelm.

The session is 50 minutes and there will be time to get an idea of whether you feel you can work with me on a regular basis.
