About me and my therapy practice

I'm a counsellor and psychotherapist offering both individual and couples therapy in central St Albans.

At the heart of my approach is the safe, trusting relationship I share with my clients. While I support my clients in directing the course of their therapy, I’m not afraid to offer challenge and to guide a little, if I believe it's therapeutically appropriate to do so.

Individual Therapy

I work with clients from all kinds of backgrounds and with numerous different presentations, including anxiety, depression, bereavement, a sense of being 'stuck' in life, relationship issues, low self esteem, and much, much more.

Couples Therapy

Counselling couples is a long-standing interest of mine. It can be challenging work, but is incredibly rewarding when real, positive change occurs.

My approach to working with couples begins with building an equal, non-judgemental relationship with each partner, no matter what has gone on historically.

Often, couples first come to see me with a sense that their relationship has become ‘stuck’ – that they’re no longer able to express themselves or feel heard. I help my clients to communicate better, to be more open and honest with each other, to express their needs without fear of confrontation.

I support my couples in navigating the bumps in the road that most relationships encounter yet so often can be a struggle to negotiate smoothly. These include infidelity, extended family issues, addiction, financial concerns, diminished intimacy, historic abuse, clash of parenting styles, jealousy, work stress, bereavement, and so on.

Practice description

Sessions are held in my private room in central St Albans.

At the moment I am only seeing clients in-person.

My first session

How does counselling begin?

It starts with a phone call, an email or a contact form enquiry. We can then arrange a free, no obligation, phone conversation, video chat, or in-person consultation where we can begin to get to know each other and I can answer your most pressing questions. If you’d like to proceed, we’ll then schedule a first session at my counselling room in central St Albans.

The initial session is an opportunity for you to discover if counselling is the right path for you, and to decide whether you’d like to work with me. I’ll listen to what’s troubling you and will ask some questions about your background and how your difficulties are affecting you in the present. If you’d then like to continue, we’ll look at setting up regular sessions.

About me and my therapy practice

Couples Counselling

My approach to couples work begins with building an equal, non-judgemental relationship with each partner, no matter what has gone on historically. It’s not unusual that one person will be more resistant to the idea of couples therapy than the other. I appreciate the reasons for this, and make every effort to ensure that both parties feel comfortable expressing themselves freely. In my experience, the more reticent person very quickly settles in and becomes as open to the process as their partner.

Often, couples first come to see me with a sense that their relationship has become ‘stuck’ - that they’re no longer able to express themselves or feel heard.

I help my clients to communicate better - to be more open and honest with each other in a way that avoids unnecessary confrontation. I encourage them to listen to one another with a greater level of understanding and compassion.

I support couples in navigating the bumps in the road that most relationships encounter yet so often can be a struggle to negotiate smoothly. These include infidelity, extended family issues, addiction, financial concerns, diminished intimacy, historic abuse, clash of parenting styles, jealousy, work stress, bereavement, and so on.

NB. I do see individual clients, also. Please see my separate profile listing.

Practice description

I work face-to-face with couples at my central St Albans room.

My first session

The process begins with a call or an email. I can then offer a free, no obligation, chat of up to 20 minutes on the phone, online or in person. If you'd then like to book in for an initial session, we'll meet in person at my St Albans room.

The first session is largely an opportunity for us to begin to get to know each other, and for me to hear what brings you to couples counselling. I'll answer any questions you might have and put a number of questions to each of you. After that, I'll meet each partner individually for one session. This gives me the chance to learn more about you, and to hear your perspective without fear of contradiction or challenge from your partner. After that, we'll all come together again for subsequent sessions (individual sessions can be requested or offered at any time).

Couple sessions are 1 hour long.
