About me and my therapy practice
Are you finding things difficult? Have life's experiences left you struggling or feeling stuck? Whatever challenges you face it can be tough finding the right person to talk to, but if you live in the Bury St Edmunds / Sudbury area perhaps I can help?
Hi, I'm Anita, an integrative counsellor and therapist. This means that I draw from several different counselling approaches as well as other psychotherapies, including CBT, NLP, EMDR and hypnotherapy, and adapt them according to what works best for you and what you are seeking from therapy. First and foremost however, I offer a safe, respectful and confidential space for you to talk and be really heard: A time and place dedicated to unravelling what is going on for you, what you need and what you respond to, to help you through difficult times and towards the change you seek.
I offer both short and long-term therapy. You may only need a few sessions, or you may benefit from us spending longer working together. Between us we’ll work through what’s right for you, your circumstances and your desired outcome.
I especially help with anxiety, stress, low mood, negative thinking, loss, trauma, confidence, self-esteem, unhelpful habits, relationship problems, work issues, phobias, weight management and personal development.
I am a firm believer that the therapeutic relationship is key to a successful outcome, so it's important you choose a therapist you are comfortable with. As such, I offer a FREE 30 minute telephone consultation so that you can ask me any questions and get a real sense of how we can work together and how I can help you. If you are interested, please email or give me a call on 07885 254319. If I’m unavailable I will get back to you as soon as possible.
I am continuing to offer therapy via secure video link or telephone for all new clients at this time in accordance with the latest government advice. I will discuss and agree the safety and practical implications of this way of working with you before we start.
Once the virus is more under control I look forward to welcoming clients back to my private, comfortable and peaceful client room on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds, situated on the A134 towards Sudbury and only a few miles from the A14. I cannot yet put a timescale on this because of the changeable nature of the current situation.
Please note: During the course of your therapy we will regularly review how you are finding things. If working online becomes an issue for you, or we identify a specific therapeutic need to work face to face, we will discuss the latest government guidance on face to face working at that time, taking into consideration both general and health risk factors, as well as any safety and practical implications and requirements for us both, and whether there are any alternative options available, before agreeing an individually safe and ethical way forward for you.
My first session
I appreciate that the first full session can be quite daunting, but perhaps think of it as a 'Discovery Session' - a chance for us to get to know each other: You finding out how it is working with me and what to expect, and me finding out about what you are struggling with and what you are seeking from therapy. You may find yourself talking far more than you expected and noticing that already something starts to change for you, but if it takes longer to open up that’s fine. We’ll work at a pace that is right for you.
Towards the start of the session I will ask you to complete a quick clinical assessment questionnaire of 34 multiple choice questions, which helps me identify your therapeutic needs, and forms a useful basis for ongoing reviews. I will take some contact details and relevant medical history, as well as explaining confidentiality, privacy and certain practical considerations such as cancellations, holidays and payments. Once you are comfortable with this, I will encourage you to talk about the reasons you have come to therapy, and what is happening for you. Towards the end of our first hour together we will discuss how to best proceed with your weekly sessions: You may just need to talk, or we may identify that working more creatively would suit you. Perhaps some basic ‘psycho-education', such as an explanation of how stress or anxiety impacts our minds and bodies, would bring relief and healing early on in therapy? We will agree what is right for you.
Generally, though, it will be a gentle exploratory conversation and time just for you, in a safe, welcoming environment. I am used to nervous clients on their first session and make it as relaxed as possible. If you are especially anxious or emotional, I will sit with you through it, and perhaps help you with a calming technique. It really is that flexible, and all about what you need.
