About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Amy and I am an attached based therapist working in Manchester. My background is working with people who have had traumatic or difficult interpersonal relationships. This ranges from people who have experienced sexual, physical or domestic abuse as well as people who find relationships difficult for reasons they might not know or understand.

As human beings, we are biologically designed to live in relationships with other humans. The quality of these relationships have a huge impact on how we feel. Feeling unheard or misunderstood by those around us can impact how we navigate the world. Without positive, fulfilling relationships in our lives, everyday living can become really tough.

As an attachment- based psychotherapist, my main focus is on the emotional impact these relationships have had on us, and how we can manage these in our present lives, enabling us to live to our best selves. This might include looking at patterns you might find yourself in repeatedly with other people or difficulties in maintaining or developing relationships with others. I work in a collaborative and exploratory way to try and help you overcome these difficulties. I am also trained in a range of different techniques for managing trauma symptoms (for example emotional or somatic flashbacks) and I sometimes use these throughout the therapy.

Practice description

My initial training was in Integrative Psychotherapy, which focused on several modalities including psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy. Since qualifying as a therapist, I have mainly worked with people who experienced significant interpersonal trauma, such as sexual abuse, domestic abuse and childhood neglect. I have worked in the NHS, in a private psychiatric hospital as well in a forensic custody setting. Alongside my private practice, I currently work with a number of specialist services who provide therapy for people who have experienced sexual violence.

I work with individuals and couples and I am qualified to work with people over 14 years of age. I have experience and training in working with neuro-diversity, particularly women who have had a late diagnosis (or who are considering going for an assessment) of Autism or ADHD. I have experience in working with the LGBTQIA community and have completed training with Pink Therapy. I am currently completing a certificate in couples therapy.

I currently am working both face to face and online and therefore am able to work with people from all over the UK.

My first session

I offer an initial phone call which is approximately 15-20 minutes, free of charge, to get a broad idea of what you are looking for from therapy. If we feel we can work together, then I suggest we meet for an initial appointment. If I don't think we are a good fit, I might be able to suggest an alternative therapist/ therapy.

For our first few appointments, I usually take a detailed history of you. I work in an exploratory way and I usually will see work with what you bring to the session each week but usually with a relational focus. I meet with clients usually once per week although I have some fortnightly sessions available.
