About me and my therapy practice

Deciding to see a therapist can be daunting but transformative and it is important that you choose an experienced therapist with whom you can build a trusting relationship. I hold a Masters in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and work with people who bring a wide range of emotional and psychological issues.

I offer either focused, short-term counselling or in-depth, medium to longer-term psychotherapy.  My approach is to work with you to explore the root causes of your problems. The focus of the therapy is for you to develop a better understanding of your thoughts, feelings, past experiences and patterns of relating and behaving that can become repeated in the present in unhelpful ways. This greater personal insight can lead to a capacity for you to be better able to manage your feelings and behaviours in the present, allowing the opportunity for change and emotionally healthier ways of being and relating.

I have worked in both the public and private sectors and am a Supervisor and Guest Lecturer at Birkbeck University (delivering workshops on short-term psychotherapy). With training in organisational processes and dynamics, I have a particular interest in mental health issues in the work-place. Prior to working as a psychotherapist, I had 20 years experience working in senior communications roles across multinationals to small organisations.

You are welcome to telephone or email me to discuss your circumstances, with a view to setting up a consultation where we can explore your difficulties and together decide the next best steps for you.

Practice description

At my private practice I provide a safe, comfortable and confidential setting: https://citylondonpsychotherapy.co.uk/

My consulting rooms are located at convenient and comfortable offices in a private and tranquil location in the City at, 1 Snow Hill Court, London EC1A 2EJ, just a few minutes walk from City Thameslink Rail Station (Holborn Viaduct exit) and approximately six minutes walk from Farringdon (rail and tube) and Chancery Lane tube stations.

My first session

Before any work commences, I offer an initial assessment or consultation. The objective of the assessment is to reach an understanding of what brought a person to seek help and to then develop a formulation of what would be most useful for example, short-term therapy, longer-term therapy or a referral for a different approach or service. This initial meeting is also an opportunity for both therapist and client to decide if they wish to work together with no obligation to commit to anything further for the time being.

Occasionally the initial consultation may be enough on its own with a client then deciding they may not need to or wish to proceed with any further work. Usually however, people do want to continue at which point an agreement is made to either: proceed with a short-term contract which means a number of sessions are agreed at the outset with an option to review the work and extend if appropriate; or work can be open-ended where there is no predetermined date but also with the opportunity to review progress. Once this is decided, specific terms can then be agreed such as frequency of sessions, typically 50 minutes once a week, appointment times and fees. Clients will then be provided with a copy of a written contract and be fully informed of and provided with a copy of a “Confidentiality, Privacy and Data Policy” before any work commences.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an accredited member of the BCAP and hold an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy from Birkbeck, University of London. I provide psychodynamic supervision for medium to longer term work and have an additional specialism in the higher education sector working with both young people and adults in a short-term modality.

Alongside my private practice in the City, I have run workshops on 'short-term psychodynamic work' for MSc students at Birkbeck, University. I have professional development training in supervision skills from the British Psychotherapy Foundation and prior to being a therapist, had a long career in communications management and supervisory roles across the corporate and not-for-profit sector. A unique aspect of the MSc course I undertook was the training in individual, group and organisational processes and dynamics which also informs my therapeutic approach.

I believe the role of a supervisor is to provide a safe, reflective and non-judgemental space for you to explore your practice. I bring to the supervision role many years of clinical experience; I work with a wide range of clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures who present with differing emotional issues from chronic mental health problems where risk can be an issue, to more everyday anxiety and low level depression. I encourage a curiosity in supervision with the exploration of the unconscious and the transference and countertransference processes, and promote best practice where professional standards are maintained and the client is always at the heart of the work.

I offer two locations for supervision: NW6 (close to Thameslink/London Overground/Jubilee line) and EC1A (Friday only, close to City Thameslink/ Farringdon and Chancery Lane tubes). To discuss your supervision needs please do contact me by phone or email with a view to setting up an initial meeting. I offer concessionary rates for Associates/Trainees.
