About me and my therapy practice

I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor specifically trained to work with children and adolescents. Alongside my training and experience as a therapist since 2016, in schools and for a local counselling service, I have over 16-years’ experience working with children and adolescents with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs in children’s homes.

I believe it is the relationship between myself and a child or young person that is central to the therapeutic process. I strongly believe that if a young person’s thoughts and feelings are accepted as neither right nor wrong but simply a reflection of their current state-of-mind, this will help them to communicate more freely and, in turn, increase their own reflective capacity.

Children and young people can sometimes struggle to communicate through words alone, and , depending on the needs and wishes of the child or young person,  it is here that I introduce the use of creative activities, and play to help with therapeutic exploration and support.

My previous positions in schools and in care settings has resulted in a wealth of experience of working with children and adolescents from a multitude of backgrounds, presenting with issues such as anxiety, low mood, trauma, bereavement, fragmented and complex family relationships, self-harm, bullying and friendship issues and the impact of social media among many.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for an informal discussion...

Practice description

I have a small private practice, based at Hayward's Heath Counselling Centre in West Sussex. Online/remote therapy can be discussed for older teenagers, but for young children I can only offer face-to-face appointments.

My first session

Typically I will have an initial consultation with a child or young person's parent or primary carer.  We can discuss whether it is appropriate for the child to be present for this, but with older children and teenagers it usually is.  Young people in their late teens may wish to attend an initial consultation without a parent or carer present - this is usually appropriate.

Initial consultations last approximately 50 minutes, while there will be some questions I need to ask and some form filling, they are largely an informal opportunity for you to get to know me and for me to understand more about what you need.
