Your well-being is my priority, and I strive to make our counselling sessions as accessible and convenient for you as possible. Currently, I offer face-to-face sessions throughout the week, as well as online sessions for those unable to attend in-person.
In the event that I am unavailable for a session, whether due to unforeseen circumstances or planned time off, rest assured that I will notify you as soon as possible. Your time is valuable, and you will not be charged in these instances. Transparency and open communication are central to our therapeutic relationship, and I am committed to keeping you informed.
About me and my therapy practice
My approach is humanistic and relational, drawing on person-centred, Gestalt and existential ideas. I see the therapeutic relationship as an important part of the work and aim to offer a space where you can feel heard, understood and able to explore things without judgement.
I work collaboratively rather than taking the position of an expert who has the answers. We can develop an understanding of what is happening for you, including the patterns you may find yourself repeating, and consider what might help you respond differently. I believe that greater self-awareness can create more choice, rather than feeling driven by familiar or automatic responses.
My practice is neuro-affirmative and I’m interested in understanding each person's experiences in their own context. I recognise that people can experience and communicate the world in very different ways, and that these differences can be particularly important within relationships.
In couples and relationship work, I prioritise what sits underneath the conflict as well as what happens on the surface. I aim to help people become curious about each other's experiences and develop greater understanding and empathy, while still making space for individual needs and perspectives. The focus is not on deciding who is right, but on understanding the pattern you have become caught in and finding ways to face difficulties together.
Practice description
I’m a BACP-registered counsellor and relationship therapist based in York, offering face-to-face counselling in central York and online sessions across the UK.
I work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, low self-esteem, bereavement, burnout and challenges relating to ADHD and autism. I also offer couples and relationship therapy for couples and other relationships, including adult family members, friends and colleagues.
Alongside my individual counselling practice, relationship therapy is an area of particular interest for me. I work with people who may be experiencing recurring conflict, communication difficulties, changes in intimacy or desire, attachment difficulties or challenges navigating significant changes within their relationship.
I have completed Level 5 training in Couples and Relationship Therapy through The Grove, on a CORST-accredited course. I am committed to supporting people to understand the relational patterns they become caught in and to find ways of working with difference, rather than feeling that one person needs to be right or change for the relationship to work.
My first session
During our initial session, you can expect a warm and welcoming environment where we'll embark on the journey of understanding your needs and goals. Prior to this, I offer a complimentary half-hour consultation session, either over the phone or online, where we can briefly connect and discuss your concerns.
In your first paid session, we'll dive deeper into getting to know each other. We'll discuss your reasons for seeking counselling, your hopes for our work together and any specific aims you may have.
To ensure that our collaboration is effective, we'll undertake a brief assessment to gain a clearer understanding of your current situation and identify areas that may require attention. This will help us tailor our approach to meet your unique needs and preferences.
Throughout, you are encouraged to share openly and honestly about your experiences, thoughts and feelings. Your input is invaluable in shaping the direction of our work together as we explore potential strategies and interventions that align with your goals and values.
By the end of the session, we'll have collaboratively developed an understanding for how we'll work together moving forward. This may include setting specific ambitions, outlining the frequency and duration of our sessions and any preferences or expectations you may have.
