I take regular breaks and give you notice about these in good time.
We usually agree a number of regular sessions - same day and time - together and then review.
About me and my therapy practice
I work in counselling and psychotherapy on a weekly basis.
The number of sessions depends upon what is needed and is discussed after an assessment session. We will make an agreement about this together. If we decide to work in an open-ended way, we will frequently review how the process is going and how many more sessions you are likely to need.
We will be focussing together on the matters that you raise and how they impact your life. The dynamic will be one of reflection and understanding. There is deep respect for you and what is possible to change. I will be honest with you and help you face what may be a difficult reality.

Practice description
You can expect to find a space where you are respected and are safe. Matters are kept confidential. I will thoughtfully engage with you and help unpack and understand your difficulties or the things that have happened to you. I will let you know how I see you and we can agree together on the things that you would like to attend to and where you would like to make changes in your life.
I will be bringing all my 30 years experience of working with individuals and couples into the room with you as well as my studying and writing about psychotherapy processes and trauma and what helps individuals make changes.
As the counselling/psychotherapy process unfolds, we will track how you are and notice how together how things are changing. In my experience, counselling and psychotherapy processes have a beginning, middle and end. In the beginning phase we work on understanding together the context of who you are and what you bring to the table. The middle phase is going into who you are in a deeper way. Through understanding and learning maybe how things have become out of balance, we can work on making some changes in your inner and outer world. Some themes will develop and I will ask you to attend to these themes and report on your observations in between sessions, threading your learning back into the process as we go through.
The ending phase ideally is characterised by a sense of a journey having come full circle and something is new and different. The ending phase draws the themes of the journey together and allows you to consolidate your learning in the journey you have made.
My first session
You are free to make a first contact with me by telephone or by email at ps@philippasmethurst.com and of course I am happy to answer any questions before we meet.
In the assessment session, I offer you a safe place to unpack what it is that brings you to me. I will ask you some questions in order to understand your context. I will always share my thinking and experience and offer any help about the kind of things that might help and how a process of investigation and sharing over some weeks and months might be of service to you.
What I would ask from you in the assessment session is for you to come prepared to explore and to share everything that is on your mind. The more I understand, the more I am able to help you. I will be sensitive to how difficult it can feel to bring sometimes difficult and painful matters to be examined.
My agreed rate will be charged for the first session.
