About me and my therapy practice
Welcome to my profile. My aim is to give you a sense of who I am and how I work but please do feel free to email me for further information and I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.
I began my counselling training in 1999 and qualified in 2003. I have worked full time within the profession ever since. I have heaps of varied experience and qualifications. However, as much as I think that they are valuable and important, my advice to anyone looking for a therapist is that the counselling relationship is the most important element. You need to feel comfortable and safe with the person who will accompany you on your very personal journey. I am often told that people feel a connection when they work with me, that I understand their struggles. I may challenge you at times and it may be difficult, counselling often is, but I aim to make you feel safe, heard and held.
Counselling is a fantastic resource when it works well. Sadly, some people have had a very negative experience and if you are one of those people then I appreciate your bravery in looking again. I have had different counsellors over the years and the majority have been excellent, life changing in fact but there has been an occasional mis-match or bad experience. If I am not the right therapist for you, for whatever reason, I will do my best to signpost you to another service or counsellor.
Practice description
My private practice has been running since I qualified in 2003 and I have also provided NHS counselling alongside this. I was a director for Counsellors Southwest who provide primary care counselling throughout Devon and I am still one of their founding counsellors. In addition to this I have also worked for charities and in further education. I was a counselling lecturer for 10 years and thoroughly enjoyed training future counsellors, watching others develop and grow and working with the group dynamic.
My counselling qualifications include an Advanced Diploma, a Post Graduate Diploma and a Diploma in Supervision. I know that for some people, counselling terminology can be extremely confusing and I would reassure you that it is not essential for you to understand what these words mean. What is most important is that you feel safe and connected to your therapist.
I studied on a BACP accredited course in Humanistic, Integrative Counselling. The Humanistic part basically means that I believe the client can find their answers from within if they are well facilitated and supported. The Integrative part means that I combine a variety of approaches because I feel that it is the practitioners responsibility to tailor the service to the client and offer choice. I strongly believe that it is in the service of the client to fit the therapy to them and not vice versa. Simplified, the belief which underpins all of the approaches that I integrate is that, through raised self-awareness, people can either change their struggle, or better understand it. I draw upon Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, the Person Centred Approach and I am very influenced by Existentialism and informed by Attachment Theory and Neuroscience.
