About me and my therapy practice

I have been working as a supervisor since 2013. I work integratively, drawing on a person-centred approach whilst integrating elements of CBT, coaching and psychodynamic theories and practice.

As I only work with qualified therapists, my approach is collegiate, that we work together as a team to support you in your practice. I want to help you to understand what you bring to supervision and why and to explore what may be going on for either/both you and the client. Sometimes we might explore what happened in a particular session, sometimes we will talk about other ways to approach a client issue or help you to explore your thoughts feelings regarding a particular client.

I find different perspectives for exploring issues, which each of us contribute to, can bring great insight, learning and growth. I also believe challenge and support to be essential elements of a good supervisory experience.

I also believe that group supervision can be a great support for counsellors, particularly those in private practice who have limited contact with colleagues. I am happy to offer group supervision if you are interested in this.

I am an active researcher within domestic abuse and have expertise in this area. I have also worked in general practice and bereavement services since qualification and bring a lot of experience around complex case work.

Feedback from my supervisees is that I am very organised, warm and supportive, as well as getting to the heart of the matter with people quite quickly. This can be quite challenging. There are supervisors who will be much less direct than I am. Depending on what you are looking for in a supervisor, I may be what you are looking for, or not! I do offer a 30 minute free session for us to meet and see whether we like each others approach!

Practice description

I have my own practice room in Great Ayton (North Yorkshire) for those who can attend in person. For those who live further away or who will find it difficult to get to Great Ayton, I also offer online or telephone supervision.

Supervision can be 1 hour or 1.5 hours per month or we can meet fortnightly for 1 hour each session if that suits your practice better.

I am only work with qualified counsellors for supervision.

I am aware that sometimes counsellors need short-term supervision as a result of their existing supervisors illness or extended leave of absence. I am happy to offer 1-3 sessions of supervision where this is possible.

Supervision is not just about case work, but about your development as a professional counsellor. This includes identifying possible CPD opportunities, looking forward at your career aspirations and what additional experience you might need to achieve your ambitions, exploring any personal difficulties you might have (in relation to your practice) as well as your development as a counsellor in practice.

I have previously run personal development groups, group supervisions and set up and managed a domestic abuse counselling clinic which grew to more than 20 counsellors, seeing over 60 clients per week. I offer this information to show the breadth of my experience and my ability to understand things from the perspective of a private practitioner, trainer and clinical lead. This can be particularly helpful for counsellors starting in a new environment.

Moving supervisors can be a trying time. As counsellors, we rely heavily on the support and understanding of our supervisor and many of us have close, long term relationships with them. Changing a supervisor is therefore not always easy, and not always something we have chosen to do. It can feel very strange in a new and different relationship, but with that also comes opportunities. I will help you to make the transition to the best of my ability.

My first session

I offer a free 30-minute introductory session where we can check whether we have the right fit for ongoing supervision work together.

If we decide to work together I will email a contract for you to look at and which we can discuss at the first session. This contains all the things you would normally expect to see so there should be no surprises. Contract discussion in the first session usually takes a maximum of 10 minutes and usually less. The remaining time will be spent discussing what you want to focus on in supervision and any supervision issues that you bring. At the end of the session we will agree a date and time for the next supervision.

Going forward, the emphasis for the content of the supervision session will lie with you so that you get what you need from supervision. If there is anything that I feel would be useful to spend time on in addition to this, I will bring this to your attention. In this way we co-create each supervision session.
