About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor, offering supervision to both qualified and trainee counsellors.

My approach to counselling and supervision is humanistic and integrative. As a counsellor, I work collaboratively with clients and draw on person-centred, CBT and solution-focused approaches according to the individual and what they bring to therapy.

My experience includes private practice, voluntary organisations, higher education, NHS settings and online counselling services. I have particular experience of supporting people affected by acquired brain injury, including the wider impact that unexpected changes in health can have on relationships, independence, identity, confidence and hopes for the future. I also work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, bereavement, stress, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and significant life changes.

As a supervisor, I bring the same warmth, openness and collaborative approach to the supervisory relationship. I want supervision to be a space where you can explore your work honestly, including uncertainty, difficult client work and those occasions when things haven't gone as you hoped, without feeling that you need to have all the answers.

I see supervision as an opportunity to consider not only the client, but the therapeutic relationship, your own responses and use of self, ethical practice, boundaries, risk and your continuing development as a practitioner.

I draw particularly on the Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision, while working flexibly and adapting supervision to the needs, experience and theoretical approach of each supervisee.

I hold an MSc in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Distinction) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision and am a Registered Member of the BACP.

Practice description

Supervision with me is collaborative, reflective and tailored to you and your practice. I aim to create a relationship where you can bring all aspects of your work – not only the things that are going well, but also uncertainty, difficult decisions, mistakes, ethical dilemmas and work that may have stayed with you.

Our sessions will give us time to explore your client work from different perspectives. We might consider what is happening for the client, your own responses and use of self, the therapeutic relationship and any wider organisational, cultural or professional factors influencing the work.

Alongside individual client work, supervision can provide space to think about your development as a practitioner. This might include confidence, professional identity, boundaries, workload, self-care, developing your way of working and managing the emotional impact of therapeutic practice.

I welcome both qualified counsellors and counsellors in training. If you are a trainee, we can work alongside the requirements of your course and placement, although I ask that you confirm with your training provider that I meet their requirements for external supervision.

I currently offer supervision online and by telephone. Sessions can be arranged for either 60 or 90 minutes depending on your supervision requirements and preferences.

Before beginning supervision, I offer a free 15-minute introductory telephone call. This gives us an opportunity to discuss what you are looking for from supervision, any professional or training requirements you have, and importantly, to get a sense of whether we feel we would work well together.

My first session

Before arranging our first supervision session, I offer a free 15-minute introductory telephone call. This gives us an opportunity to talk about what you are looking for from supervision, your current practice and experience, and whether we feel we would work well together.

Our first supervision session will give us more time to get to know one another and begin establishing how we would like to work together. We will discuss your current client work, theoretical approach, professional or training requirements and what you would like from supervision.

We will also agree our supervision contract, including confidentiality and its limits, professional responsibilities, ethical practice, risk and safeguarding, record keeping, communication between sessions and practical arrangements such as frequency, duration, fees and cancellations.

If you are a trainee counsellor, we will also consider the requirements of your training provider and placement and any documentation or reports that may be required from me as your supervisor.

I don't expect you to arrive at supervision with everything perfectly organised or all the answers. Supervision is a place for curiosity and reflection, and I hope you will feel able to bring uncertainty and difficulties as well as the work that is going well.

Most importantly, our first session gives us both an opportunity to establish whether the supervisory relationship feels like a good fit and provides the kind of support and challenge you need.

About me and my therapy practice

Life doesn't always turn out as we expected. Sometimes change happens gradually; at other times something happens that suddenly leaves life feeling very different.

You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed or low, struggling with a loss or relationship, adjusting to changes in your health, work or family life, or perhaps questioning who you are and where you go from here. Sometimes there isn't one particular reason for seeking counselling – you simply know that things don't feel right.

I'm Jill, a warm and approachable psychotherapeutic counsellor. I offer a space where you can talk openly about what is happening in your life, without judgement, pressure or expectations.

I have particular experience of supporting people through loss, changes in health, identity and significant life transitions. This includes working with people affected by acquired brain injury and seeing first-hand how an unexpected change can affect not only someone's health, but their relationships, independence, confidence, sense of self and hopes for the future.

Alongside this, I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and other challenges that can make life feel difficult or overwhelming.

My experience includes working in private practice, voluntary organisations, higher education, NHS settings and online counselling services.

I currently offer counselling online and by telephone, so you can access support from the privacy and comfort of your own home.

If you're wondering whether counselling – or counselling with me – might be right for you, you're very welcome to get in touch. I offer a free 15-minute introductory telephone call, with no obligation to book.

Practice description

Sometimes we spend so much time coping, looking after other people or simply getting through each day that there is very little opportunity to think about how we are actually feeling.

Counselling gives you time that is yours.

My approach is warm, compassionate and collaborative. I won't tell you what you should do or expect you to have all the answers. Instead, we will work together to explore what is happening for you and begin to make sense of your thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Change and loss can affect us in many different ways. We may grieve not only for people we have lost, but for relationships, health, independence, careers, opportunities or the future we imagined for ourselves. Counselling can provide somewhere to explore these experiences and begin to find a way forward that feels right for you.

I am a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor with an MSc in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Distinction) and a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).

I work with adults and offer both short-term and longer-term counselling depending on your circumstances and what you would like from therapy.

Sessions are currently available online or by telephone and cost £40.

My first session

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting, particularly if you have never spoken to a counsellor before.

That's why I offer a free 15-minute introductory telephone call before you decide whether you would like to book a session.

There is no obligation to continue. It's simply an opportunity for you to tell me a little about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you may have and get a sense of whether you feel comfortable talking with me.

If you decide you would like to continue, our first counselling session gives us more time to explore what has been happening for you and what you would like from counselling.

There is no expectation that you tell me everything in the first session. We will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and you remain in control of what you choose to talk about.

Most importantly, the first session is also an opportunity for you to decide whether I feel like the right counsellor for you.
