About me and my therapy practice
I have 30 years experience providing supervision for counsellors.
Supervision improves outcomes for clients by providing support, professional development and monitoring safe practice. I enjoy helping supervisees deepen their practice over time.
I’ve supervised counsellors working in the NHS, EAPs, student services, charity settings, medical settings and in private practice. I’ve supervised counsellors at all stages of their career, from training placement to mature practice. I have given group and individual supervision.
Practice description
My supervision, like my counselling style, is relational. We will give attention to the dynamics within the client's internal and external world, those between client and counsellor and those between supervisee and supervisor.
Giving therapy is a life-long committment for many. Counsellors can be sustained through the difficulties of this work when their practice is developing in a way which embodies their heart's vision and motivation. As "shakey human beings" (Gendlin) clients will take us to areas of our own uncertainty yet we need to be comfortable enough in those places to embody calm connection. Distressed clients will need to "borrow our ability to regulate" as a step towards developing their own.
In supervision we work together to name what is going on with kindness and a respect for its part in the overall picture. Supervision sessions are both exploratory and supportive.
My first session
Free initial phone/zoom/whatsapp meeting of 30 minutes. After this meeting we can decide if we want start working together.
As we go forward we can make adjustments to the way we discuss your work. We can also have reviews peridically.

I've been in professional practice for 35 years. I provide one-to-one counselling and supervision. I work with adults. Sessions are online or in person at my therapy room in Marsden, near Huddersfield.
Talking to a counsellor gives you a chance to reflect on what's going on for you. I will not judge or criticise. I will ask questions which help us both understand your situation.
Client and counsellor figure things out together: it’s a co-operative process. You find words for what’s happening… I listen and check my understanding. We help each other to create a shared picture we can work with. This shared picture is not something you could have come up with on your own. With my support you may experiment with new behaviour and learn from the results.
The only way to find out what counselling feels like is to try it. You are welcome to book an initial phone/zoom/whatsapp so we can discuss working together. This will be for 30 minutes and is free. After this meeting we can decide if we want to work together.
Sessions last 60 minutes and take place at planned times. It is often best to start out weekly but sessions can be spaced out later, as you get more control of your issue. Counselling ends whenever you say.

Practice description
When working on an issue it is helpful to have regular meetings. The work will involve noticing things happening in sessions and between sessions, ie becoming aware of things happening between you and others, and things happening within yourself. You can try new behaviour between sessions, knowing you have my support to think about the results.
The work we do together will involve guided awareness exercises to help you calm your nervous system. Gradually your body can become a resource and refuge rather than a threat. If your body gets triggered into alarm or shutdown states when you talk or think about past experiences, we will first work to regulate your bodily state. Once you have the ability to calm yourself, you can decide if you want to talk through the traumatic events themselves. Sometimes learning the skills of self-regulation is enough. This will be your decision.
