About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Rob French. I'm a supervisor for counsellors, psychotherapists and trainees. I work in Kings Cross, London Bridge, and online.

My supervision training at the Minster Centre was integrative, and my core psychotherapy training was Gestalt. I'm also influenced by other approaches, including Person Centred, psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and somatic practices.

Before becoming a therapist I was a furniture maker and a secondary school teacher. I'm currently in private practice as therapist and supervisor, and I tutor at the Gestalt Centre, where I teach a foundation course in humanistic counselling.

Practice description

In supervision, as in therapy, I'm warm, engaging and affirming. I believe that supervision works best as an enjoyable, mutual creative process that supports therapists and counsellors in their client-work through increased awareness.

I engage in the ongoing lifetimes' work of deepening my awareness around diversity, equity and inclusion. I hope that my work makes a small but important contribution towards social justice.

My first session

In the first session we will be beginning to get to know each other and contracting. We may do some work with your clients if that feels right.

I largely work by raising awareness through emerging process, rather than following a structure or formula. As such, we will find our way along together to identify and meet your supervision needs.

I look forward to hearing from you if you think you would like to work with me.

Thanks for reading,

Rob.

About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Rob French. I'm a counsellor and psychotherapist working in Kings Cross, London Bridge, and online. I'm also a supervisor and a tutor at the Gestalt Centre, where I teach on a counselling course.

I can work with you to address a specific difficulty, or in a general 'self-development' way based on increasing awareness.

The greater our self-understanding, the more able we are to manage life's difficulties, form nourishing relationships and lead satisfying lives. In this way, therapy can be seen as an investment in ourselves and in others.

Practice description

At the heart of my approach is the humanistic belief that people are naturally oriented towards health and growth. I see my job as one of supporting my client’s natural process through increased awareness.

This is a specific attitude towards life and change- it rests on the belief that natural and long-lasting change comes from within, rather than being imposed from the outside.

People are very good at doing the best they can with what they’ve got. As we navigate our way through childhood into adulthood, we generally manage life as best we can.

Difficulties often arise due to unaware value systems, fixed patterns of relating to others, lost potential, ways of being that are responses to adverse childhood relationships, or societal prejudice and discrimination.

Behaviours such as people-pleasing, avoidance, perfectionism, over-working, depression, self-criticism, addiction, and so forth are often attempted solutions to life’s difficulties.

By exploring, understanding, increasing awareness, we can facilitate long-lasting, non-coercive change. Problematic feelings and behaviours subside when their meaning is understood and necessary change is accomplished.

Tonally, I'm warm, engaging and affirming. I strive to follow the four 'H's' for therapy- Honesty, Humanity, Humour and Humility.

I look forward to hearing from you if you think you would like to work with me.

Thanks for reading,

Rob.

My first session

If you think you might like to work with me, I hope you will feel free to get in contact.

I'll reply with my availability and we'll see if we can find a time that works for both of us. We can then look at setting up an initial session.

The initial session will give you the opportunity to see if I'm what you're looking for, and if you feel comfortable with me. I will learn about your goals and I will tell you how I think we can meet them.

I see the initial session as a stand-alone session in itself, and not just for assessment. Among my aims are that you find value in it, have a positive experience, and know whether you would like to continue.

Thank you for reading,

Rob.
