About me and my therapy practice

I have over 10 years' experience as a Supervisor for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, GPs, Palliative Care Consultants, Hospital Chaplaincy services and Teaching staff. I have also published articles, reviews and books in my field, sometimes collaborating with others in the Humanistic and Philosophical field of psychotherapy.

I offer a reflective space to explore client work, experiences and concerns, organisational issues, and sometimes the supervisory relationship itself.

As a supervisory relationship can last many years as we develop into and out of any work that we are engaged in within the helping professions, be it therapeutic, medical, social, educational, or pastoral, I fully understand that a suitable match is important and I hope that the information and descriptions I have given about my work as a therapeutic practitioner have already gone some way to inform you about my values in the work. If we engage in supervision, our work will be underpinned by encouragement, support and equality and will meet the standards articulated in the BACP ethical framework.

Both my therapeutic and supervision training are at post-graduate level, the later taken over a 2 year period with Cambridge Supervision Training accredited by The Association of Adlerian Psychology.

Whilst updating regularly with CPD, I also engage monthly in the practice of 'Supervision of Supervision' to support this work.

Practice description

My approach:

As a Person-Centred/Experiential Psychotherapist grounded in the Humanistic tradition, my Supervision practice is grounded in this tradition and also complemented by training, education and experience in the Arts, Philosophy and Zen Buddhism.  Our work together will be to enquire about experiential process for you and your client, be curious about the playing out of parallel process, attending to practicalities of the work, but mostly, to be supportive with empathic, ethical enquiry for a safe and beneficial supervisory relationship.

About me and my therapy practice

16+ years’ experience in the NHS, Higher Education and Independent settings in the Cambridge and Essex, and I have over 10yrs experience as a Supervisor for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, Trainees, GPs, Palliative Care Consultants, Hospital Chaplaincy services and Teaching staff. As a writer I have contributed articles, reviews and books in my field, and as a lecturer and trainer in counselling and personal development, I have delivered events at Cambridge University, University of Sussex, Anglia Ruskin University, and Shrewsbury College.

I offer a limited number of clients bespoke, depth-oriented therapeutic work, and I deliberately choose to keep a small concurrent caseload so that I can offer each person the time, attention and continuity in what is often intimate, sensitive, transformative work; depth requires time, presence and an individual approach.

My job is to be with you when your experience of life, an event, or a dilemma, is causing struggle or suffering. Together, our task will be to find a way through and to find a way to trust that when life is tough you will be okay - we do that by leaning in, which is courageous and requires pacing and steady containment.

The rhythm of the work

There are lots of different rhythms in the world of therapy depending upon the modality being offered: six-week solution-focused work, single-session therapy, five sessions a week in psychoanalysis and everything in between. The rhythm I offer is one I have chosen because I believe it can offer both containment and flexibility in the therapeutic relationship.

The monthly rhythm I work with allows for those who want a weekly commitment to get into the frame and depth of the work more fully, and also accommodates those for whom fortnightly sessions may be more suitable because they are a seasoned client, have done lots of change work, life is busy, it suits their pocket a little more easily, or what they are wanting to work with requires a gentler pace.

Practice description

Working With Me:

My job is to be with you when your experience of life, an event, or a dilemma, is causing struggle or suffering. Together, our task will be to find a way through and to find a way to trust that when life is tough you will be okay - we do that by leaning in, which is courageous.

Your therapeutic Journey:

You are not alone on this journey of change - I am here to bear witness, be alongside, alert you to what I notice, help you explore experiences, choices and actions to take forward. I will be alongside to what may be illuminated, and help you to bear the illumination when it comes. My intention is to be of aid so that you can feel grounded in a groundless world, light up, even if that means learning to be okay in the dark.

We will do this by listening deeply to what is said and unsaid; by being curious and creative; by perhaps working with your dreams and vivid imagination; by developing trust so that we can challenge and move forward.

My approach:

As a Person-Centred/Experiential Psychotherapist grounded in the Humanistic tradition, my practice is informed and complemented by training, education and experience in the Arts, Philosophy and Zen Buddhism, with particular emphasis on those existential ideas of impermanence, choice and freedom. I work with the human condition when we feel life to be difficult with experiences of anxiety, loss, grief, identity, confidence and self-esteem, relationship difficulties, decision-making, life transitions, traumatic experience and low mood, to name but a few of our human challenges.

About me and my therapy practice

I have over 16 years’ experience in the NHS, Higher Education and Independent settings in the Cambridge and Essex regions, and over 10 years experience as a Supervisor for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, Trainees, GPs, Palliative Care Consultants, Hospital Chaplaincy services and Teaching staff. I have contributed articles, reviews and books in my field, and as a lecturer and trainer in counselling and personal development, I have delivered events at Cambridge University, University of Sussex, Anglia Ruskin University, and Shrewsbury College.

How I work:

I offer a limited number of clients bespoke, depth-oriented therapeutic work, with enough continuity to do meaningful work, but enough flexibility and pacing to respond to the individual. I deliberately choose to keep a small concurrent caseload so that I can offer each person the time, attention and continuity in what is often intimate, sensitive, transformative work; depth requires time, presence and an individual approach.

The rhythm of the work

There are lots of different rhythms in the world of therapy depending upon the modality being offered: six-week solution-focused work, single-session therapy, five sessions a week in psychoanalysis and everything in between. The rhythm I offer is one I have chosen because I believe it can offer both containment and flexibility in the therapeutic relationship with safety and containment.
