About me and my therapy practice
I am an Accredited psychodynamic counsellor with 15 years of continual practice experience. I also have 10 years of experience training new psychodynamic and integrative counsellors and psychotherapists.
Beginning counselling is understandably daunting. In my experience, people can feel self indulgent and as if they are making a fuss in seeking help, or it may feel as if your problems are so overwhelming that no one can help you. Counselling can help you. I consistently find that, once people engage with counselling, they wish they had done it sooner.
The nature of difficulties such as anxiety and depression are often that it feels like something that 'happens' to us, perhaps periodically throughout life or suddenly as in panic attacks or flashbacks. Such experiences are not meaningless, nor are they from out of the blue. Pain and distress can come to feel a part of who we are, it can be difficult to imagine it could be any different. It can be different.
You may have reached a time in your life when you would like to know yourself more fully, to gain in emotional freedom, to have more satisfying relationships and an enriched sense of meaning to your life. Finding a therapeutic relationship within which to deeply explore your life and concerns can be enormously liberating.
Practice description
• I offer short or long term work. You don’t have to decide before you start, we will discuss this in the first couple of sessions.
Short term therapy (normally 6-16 sessions) is for when you want to focus on a particular issue and gain some clarity or come to a resolution about your feelings or direction. A surprising amount can be achieved in 6 sessions but clearly it’s a limited time frame. Generally it might be helpful to view it as a means to get a view of the landscape in which your distress lies. It is also useful to get a taste of what therapy might be able to do for you, or to gain an understanding of where the work may lie for you whether you carry on to address that independently or do a longer piece of work with a therapist.
Open ended therapy is where the end is not fixed from the start, so can be of any length. It is an opportunity to open up a space in which to explore and think more deeply about your life and concerns. This may last a year, or five years or more. We will discuss our progress, where we have got to, and think about our eventual ending together as we go along.
My first session
In a first meeting, we will think about your current and past experiences and will think together about what's happening for you, and what you hope for from counselling. I will be interested in your understanding of what has brought you to this point and I will offer you any thoughts I have if that is something you would like at that point. It is an opportunity for us both to consider if we would like to work together. There is no obligation to continue, but you should have an idea about whether or not I could be helpful to you by the end of our first meeting.
The session lasts for 50 minutes and is charged as usual. I ask for the fee in advance of the first session. We will discuss ongoing payment arrangements once we have established that we would like to continue to work together.
