About me and my therapy practice

I am an NHS trained Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, a Mindfulness and Compassion Teacher and Clinical Supervisor.  I have training and experience in a number of approaches that enables me to meet the needs of my clients in a flexible and effective way. I also support other therapists in the work they do with their clients.

I mainly work with adults and enjoy doing so with people from all backgrounds and orientations. I believe that all humans appreciate understanding, kindness and connection and wish to avoid suffering and move towards greater well-being. And even if we do not always know how or have the supportive conditions to help us do so, when those conditions are put in place, then movement towards greater well-being will naturally occur. A supportive therapeutic relationship can contribute significantly towards this happening.

My additional Mindfulness and Compassion training built upon my long-term interest and practice of Mindfulness and Compassion based approaches. It enhances my professional tool kit as a therapist by allowing me to bring elements of Mindfulness and Compassion based approaches into my work where it serves clients, adding a dimension to my practice that isn't always found in other modalities. These approaches can help people meet a range of difficulties, including stress, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem, for example, with more insightkindness and skill.

Practice description

I provide an open, kind, aware space that is accepting, empathic, safe and confidential to help you explore your life situation and yourself. Helping you bring more awareness, clarity and kindness to your experience, we can then explore what choices and options there are regarding how you relate to your inner and outer worlds and relationships, and then see what strategies you can use to help implement those choices in a way that is beneficial to you in your life.

At times, our situation, thoughts and emotions can feel intense or overwhelming due to our past or recent experiences and how we relate to them. Maybe our emotional world feels numb or blocked, perhaps there is confusion, a lack of meaning and direction in our life or concerns about the past or future. During such times it can be difficult to see a clear way through our experience.

If we have support from friends and family, it isn't always easy to share the full extent of our concerns with them. Indeed, our relationships (or lack of relationship) with our family, our partner, friends, colleagues and even with our-self, can be where we are experiencing the problems and difficulties.

My experience, integrative training and continuing professional development, provide me with the flexibility to draw on a number of theories and approaches including, Person Centred, Relational, Existential, Psychodynamic, Cognitive, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as Mindfulness and Compassion based approaches, to match what best serves you.

Whether you are looking to make defined and definite changes in your life or are less clear about your current experience and would like a more open exploration, the style, structure and pace of the sessions follows your needs.

Feel free to get in touch for an initial no obligation call, to share a little about your needs at this time, ask any questions you may have, and decide on your next steps.

My first session

Our first session will give us an opportunity to get to know each other a little, find out more about your needs, what has brought you to therapy and what it is you would like us to initially look at together.

If you have had therapy before, then I would be interested to hear about your past experience, what went well or not so well, for example.

We would also talk over our working agreement, looking at things like confidentiality, ideas and expectations of therapy and practical considerations like how often we plan to meet and when, for example.

There is no need for you to share everything all at once, anything you are uncomfortable about sharing or discuss anything you don't want to. As a therapist grounded in a person centred approach, I take your lead in terms of what you want to look at and where you want to go. You are invited to share your experience and give feedback about the process whenever you choose to and during times when we review how we feel the work we are doing together is going.

Feel free to get in touch for an initial no obligation call, to share a little about your needs at this time, ask any questions you may have, and decide on your next steps.

My standard working days are Monday to Friday, 9am is my first session slot and 7pm is my last session slot. I do not work on weekends.

About me and my therapy practice

I have a Level 6 Diploma in Individual and Group Clinical Supervision and have been providing supervision since 2015. I offer supervision to Counsellors and Psychotherapists, as well as individuals and staffing bodies in organisations who's work either requires or would benefit from the support and holding space of the group supervision process. I have also trained as a supervisor for Mindfulness Based Interventions.

I am a Clinical Supervisor at Headstrong Counselling for trainee Counsellors, at Pilgrims, Wisdom and Demelza Hospices for qualified Counsellors and for Counsellors at all different stages in their career working in various settings, in my Clinical Supervision private practice. I really enjoy the privilege of working with and supporting peers in this way.

I trained within the NHS for my PG Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counselling, which had a Humanistic, Person Centred, Relational base and also gave consideration to Psychodynamic, Cognitive and Existential models. I am also trained in and have extensive experience practising and delivering Mindfulness and Compassion based approaches in the private, public and third sectors, and therefore emphasise the qualities of kind-awareness, embodied presence, the felt-sense and a compassionate focus in my work.

I currently work with adults in full time private practice, as well as run workshops and courses in mindfulness, compassion and mental health awareness. In the past I worked with students in an FE college and addicts in a drug and alcohol service within HM's Prisons. Prior to that I had a career in education and training as a school teacher, adult education teacher and in educational management and my undergraduate degree was in Philosophy.

Practice description

I see supervision as a space where peers come together to openly explore work in a way that helps support your professional and ethical integrity as well as your personal and professional growth and development. The overall aim is to enable you to be of most benefit to your clients within the contexts being worked with, best you can, following your preferred model of orientation.

I take a person-centred approach regarding supervisees setting the agenda for what they want to bring and explore each supervision session, but also offer reflections, suggestions and challenges as the need emerges in a collaborative and collegiate spirit.

I use a number of integrated supervision models to help guide us in this process and adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework and the guidance in the BACP Supervision Competence Framework.

Regardless of the particular model, I see the supervision space as one that can address three areas:

  • Exploring your client work and all that entails.
  • Room for you, what you are holding and how the work is impacting you.
  • Any administrative, procedural, ethical or managerial considerations that impact your work.

My first session

Commonly, I would welcome a no obligation phone or video call in the first instance, to find out a little about your background, training and experience and what your current supervisory needs are, also for us to both get an initial sense of how we might work together.

If we both feel it is good to proceed, I will then send over a draft Supervision Working Agreement for you to review and make suggestions about if you have any, plus practicalities about payment for sessions.

In the first session, if we have done the getting to know each other bit previously, you would then be welcome to bring anything you feel the need to bring and we can begin the exploration together from there.
