About me and my therapy practice

My belief is ‘Come as you are’. The experiences you have had in life – however difficult, traumatic, or painful were not your fault. We find ourselves born into families, cultures, environments, religions that we have no control over. We don’t get a say in the early chapters of our life. This does not mean we cannot start to re-write the ‘now’. We can start to work on how those early experiences impact on our lives now, how we respond to them, how we feel about them and above all, realise we are not defined by them.

Practice description

I am an accredited psychotherapist with over 20 years’ experience of working in mental health. I am an accredited Interpersonal Psychotherapist (IPT), I am also accredited with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and trained with years of experience in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Skills based Therapy (DBT) with my core background and training being in Person-Centred Counselling.

I have over 10 years of working for the NHS where I continue to work with patients presenting with multiple diagnoses including personality disorders, Neurodiversity, complex trauma, relationship issues, eating disorders, grief and have a special interest in supporting perinatal clients. I offer an integrative approach, I believe whatever is going on for you, we will work with together, in a safe, non-judgmental way. I have years of experience treating depression caused by interpersonal difficulties and relationship-based issues. My aim is to improve not only depression, but the individual’s social and interpersonal functioning.

I am passionate about supporting and empowering individuals to feel heard and have their feelings validated. Often high levels of guilt and shame lead to an increase in self-criticism, I use Compassion Focused Therapy to aid my client’s understanding of their inner critic and to learn ways to respond with compassion to quieten these criticisms and help facilitate positive change in their lives.

My first session

I know how important finding someone you feel comfortable with is when looking for therapy. I always encourage my clients to think about the importance of this to ensure their goals and needs are met.

To help with this - I offer a 30-minute free initial consultation to establish what is going on for you and how we may work together.  This is also an opportunity to help answer any questions you may have, ease any anxieties, and help you to feel comfortable, as I know how much courage it takes to start looking for support.

I will use the consultation to ask you some questions to help me understand what is going on for you.  We will consider any preferences you have, such as the frequency of sessions and how we will review therapy to ensure you feel safe and supported to explore your difficulties.   We will set some initial goals for treatment and agree a contract of how we will work together.

If you would like to discuss this further with me, please feel free to get in touch.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Ann-Marie

Supervisor - SADDLEWORTH

Sessions from £50.00

Availability

I provide clinical supervision on Mondays and some evenings. I am happy to be flexible to meet your needs as best I can.

I offer a sliding scale, with sessions costing £50-£75, with concessions available for those on limited income and students

About me and my therapy practice

I completed my accredited supervising training with the British Psychological Society (BPS) with Manchester University in 2021.

My supervision style is based on the Cyclical Model (Page & Wosket 1994), the Process Model (Hawkins & Shohet, 2012) and the “Seven-Eyed Model” (Hawkins & Shohet, 2012).  Flexing between these models provides a strong basis whilst allowing me to work flexibly, adapting to what my supervisee brings or any presenting issues that emerge.  I am flexible in my approach and adapt to meet their needs, being led by the supervisee – as opposed to being restricted by a model

Forming a working alliance is fundamental; one that is built on trust, respect, and the sharing of mutual expectations. The contract forms the basis in which the relationship can grow. My approach to supervision reflects my practice, integrative, humanistic, and relational.

I have provided clinical supervision to trainee counselling psychologists, counsellors and CFT therapists (Compassion Focused Therapists).  I believe the relationship between supervisee and supervisor is crucial. I do my utmost to ensure my supervisee feels safe and contained in supervision and always treat them with respect and fairly.

Practice description

The core of my practice is support and collaboration, sharing of information and skills and providing a safe environment in which to explore.

I have a curious approach to my supervisee, encouraging and supporting them to explore all modes within supervision whilst reflecting on all aspects of the model. I provide feedback and support appropriate to the level of the supervisee, whilst attempting to be aware of their training needs. I monitor the counselling work in respect of the welfare of both the supervisee and their clients. I continue to review and develop my skills through training and personal development. This enables me to authentically encourage supervisees to broaden their knowledge and skills in other modalities and consider how these can be integrated into their practice.

Using the “Seven-Eyed Model” (Hawkins & Shohet, 2012), sessions are influenced by the particular focus of the work at that time. This really enables us to focus on what the supervisee knows about the client, the strategies the supervisee is engaging in and the skills they are using, including any recurring themes in response to these or resistance to. We explore the relationship between the client and supervisee, including what is taking place consciously / unconsciously in the relationship.  This model allows me to be curious with my supervisee and facilitates a greater understanding for us both by supporting the supervisee to take a step back from their perspective to gain greater understanding of the relationship dynamics.

My first session

I welcome an initial informal chat to see if we can work together.  I offer supervision remotely - either over video link or telephone.
