About me and my therapy practice

At certain points in everyone's lives, there comes a time when life, work, family, loss, or the unhelpful ways you cope with stress can become overwhelming.

One in four or five people have difficulty with their mental health throughout their life span, which could be stress, anxiety and/or depression, through to something more serious where other services are required.

I have accumulated a wealth of experience in my twenty-year career, whilst working in the addiction and substance misuse recovery field, which included working with people's underlying trauma.

I have worked in therapeutic communities with young people who are Autistic and have been diagnosed with ADHD, and those who are neurodivergent.

Over the last five years, I have been a highly specialist psychotherapist in the NHS. I have experience working with a range of relational and emotional difficulties, ranging from anxiety, depression, work-related stress, addiction and addictive behaviours, bereavement and loss through life transitions and stages of life.

Many people may have stopped talking about the pandemic. There are still those who have found the self-isolation and lockdowns a challenge, or I have had some people say that it levelled the playing field of life. The pandemic has impacted people's lives both financially and emotionally. You may want a space to discuss the past, the present, and the future.

Practice description

The initial contact is usually by telephone. We will have a conversation and decide if you would like to continue with an assessment.

The assessment is an opportunity to tell me about yourself. I ask some questions about your past and present life, which can be insightful and inform our future work together.

After the assessment, we decide how long we could potentially work together. Then you decide if you wish to continue to work with me.  We book a day and time that suits us both.

I have individual therapy and group psychotherapy sessions available.

Supervision: I provide individual and group supervision for student counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and experienced therapists.

I am an accredited member of the UKCP and a Registered Member of the BACP Association, and a member of the Institute of Group Analysis.

I work either face-to-face and am currently in Sheffield (S10 and S11) or online via Zoom.  I provide short-term and long-term individual and group psychotherapy.

I look forward to working with my future clients.

My first session

I know it is not easy to approach a psychotherapist for the first time. Speaking with a stranger about such personal life issues can feel daunting initially, though once you get through those initial anxieties, you could be surprised by how helpful it can be to talk with someone you have no prior contact with.  The assessment process and initial telephone call help you be a bit more familiar with me and my style of working.

In the first session, you may have experienced thoughts and feelings from your previous assessment with me that we could explore.  After that, you have fifty minutes, once a week, on the same day and time, to have uninterrupted space and time for yourself to explore whatever comes into your mind.

The identity of your requirements and whether you will need weekly or fortnightly supervision, individual or in a group.

Then our journey begins.

I like to take a full education, training and work history before we start working together.  This helps me understand where we are working from, a beginning.

Iinitally its good to write as close to verbatim notes as possible, and as the work grows, the notes change as you grow.
