About me and my therapy practice
I know from personal experience how daunting and stressful it can be when looking for a counsellor, with so many to choose from and lots of intimidating therapeutic jargon to be bamboozled by. So I will do my best to keep this as short and simple as possible.
I am a BACP-registered counsellor, qualifying in 2016, and have a wealth of personal and professional experience. I have worked in various settings over the years, from addiction treatment at the Priory to more general work with the NHS. I now work for myself and am based in London.
People come to counselling for different reasons. You may be struggling with depression, painful childhood memories, suicidal ideation, low self-esteem, work-related stress, anxiety, relationship issues or trauma. Or you may simply feel that life has become unmanageable but you're not sure why.
Many people also feel somewhat inadequate in life or have carried a sense of shame for years. Therapy can provide a safe and confidential space to explore these things in a non-judgemental and accepting way.
My work is based in the Person-Centred Approach. I do not give advice or tell you what to do, but instead work alongside you with curiosity, honesty and empathy, helping you to validate and make sense of your own experiences, deepen your self-awareness, and ultimately discover your own strengths and unique path in life.
And there is no expectation of long-term commitment as I work on an appointment-by-appointment basis. Whether you decide to come for longer-term therapy or just a few sessions, both are fine - my goal is that you will feel genuinely heard, supported and understood as we work together.
Practice description
I provide online counselling via Zoom or telephone throughout the UK and internationally. Sessions last fifty minutes and take place in a non-judgemental, accepting and confidential environment where you can speak openly at your own pace.
You don't need to have a big goal or everything figured out before coming. Some people do start with a clear idea of what they want to explore, while others simply know that life feels difficult and want help making sense of their feelings, thoughts or behaviours. Both are fine.
My work is based in the Person-Centred Approach, which means I don't give advice or offer quick solutions. Instead, I work alongside you with curiosity, honesty and empathy, knowing that, given the right conditions, people have an incredible capacity for change and growth.
Where it feels relevant, we may look into how earlier experiences and key relationships continue to impact your life. My aim is always to help you develop self-awareness, strengthen self-compassion, and move towards a life that feels more fulfilling and authentic to you.
There is no expectation of long-term commitment as I work on an appointment-by-appointment basis. Whether you decide to come for longer-term therapy or just a few sessions, both are fine - my goal is that you will feel genuinely heard, supported and understood as we work together.
My first session
Please message me here or email me at tomwoolston@gmail.com
After you get in touch, we'll schedule in a short phone call (which usually lasts around twenty minutes).
This is a free, zero-obligation opportunity for you to see if we're a good fit for each other before you commit to the first full-length session. You can tell me what brings you to counselling, what you're looking to get out of it, and I can share with you how I work and answer any questions you may have.
This isn't a pressurised sales call in disguise - I won't put you on the spot to make a decision there and then. You can have a think and get back to me in your own time, in fact I would encourage it as it's worth shopping around when it comes to finding the right person to work with.
