About me and my therapy practice

I am Josephine. A warm welcome to my practice.

I am a BACP accredited psychotherapist with 10 years’ experience working with adults and couples, specialising in Schema Therapy for perfectionism, people-pleasing and the enduring impact of emotional neglect. My work is grounded in depth, relational integrity and careful attention to the emotional patterns that shape our inner lives. My practice in this area has developed through dedicated advanced training in Schema-informed approaches and extensive clinical experience working with long-standing relational patterns.

Many of the individuals I work with are thoughtful, high-achieving and deeply responsible. From the outside, life may appear stable and successful. Internally, however, there can be a persistent sense of pressure — a harsh inner critic, difficulty resting, fear of disappointing others, and an underlying feeling of never quite being enough.

Practice description

Emotional neglect is rarely dramatic. It is often subtle — a lack of consistent attunement, comfort or emotional validation. Many people who experienced it learned to minimise their needs and maximise their usefulness. Perfectionism and people-pleasing can grow from this soil. They become ways of earning safety, approval or belonging. Yet beneath them, there is often a deep longing to feel fully seen and accepted without performance.

Schema Therapy allows us to work at depth, identifying the underlying schemas and coping modes that continue to drive these patterns. Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, our work attends to the emotional roots — the early adaptations that once protected you but may now feel limiting or exhausting.

In therapy, we aim to:

Soften the internalised critical voice

Reduce compulsive striving and over-responsibility

Strengthen a grounded, compassionate adult self

Develop clear and confident boundaries

Restore connection to your own emotional needs

The therapeutic relationship itself forms an essential part of the work. Consistency, emotional attunement and psychological safety are central. Change happens not through pressure, but through careful, relational depth.

This approach is particularly suited to individuals who are psychologically minded, reflective and ready to engage in meaningful, in-depth therapeutic work. If you are seeking more than coping strategies — and are interested in understanding and transforming long-standing patterns at their roots — I would be pleased to hear from you to arrange an initial consultation.

My first session

Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, especially if you’re used to managing everything on your own. I offer a complimentary 20-minute introductory call where we can gently explore what’s bringing you here and what you’re hoping might change. This is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation — simply a space for you to ask questions and see whether working together feels right.

If you choose to continue, our first full session includes a thoughtful but gentle assessment process. This helps me understand your experiences — particularly patterns around emotional neglect, perfectionism, or people-pleasing — and how they may be showing up in your life now. Together, we’ll begin identifying your needs, your goals, and what feeling “better” truly looks like for you.

My intention is to create a space where you don’t have to perform, prove, or get it right — just a space where you can begin to be heard and supported.

About me and my therapy practice

I am Josephine and a very warm welcome to my therapy page.

I am a BACP-accredited counsellor and Psychotherapist with over 10 years of experience working with adults. I offer a safe space, confidential, and non-judgemental space where clients can explore difficulties at their own pace and work towards meaningful and lasting change.

I work integratively, tailoring therapy to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits all approach. My work is strongly informed by Schema Therapy, alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Person- Centred Therapy. This integrative approach allows me to address both present-day difficulties and the deeper, long-standing patterns that often develop in response to early life experiences.

A core focus of my work is childhood emotional neglect, and the ways unmet emotional neglect, and the ways unmet emotional needs in early relationships can shape beliefs about self and others, emotional regulation, and relational patterns in adulthood. Schema Therapy provides a helpful framework for understanding and working with these patterns, supporting clients to identify and change unhelpful schemas and coping modes and to develop healthier ways to meeting their emotional needs.

I commonly work with clients presenting with difficulties such as low-self-esteem, chronic feelings of emptiness, anxiety, depression, people-pleasing, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, emotional disconnection, and a strong inner critic, which are often linked to early emotional neglect and entrenched schemas

I work collaboratively and place a strong importance on the therapeutic relationship, aiming to offer a compassionate and supportive space in which clients can build self-awareness, self-compassion, and lasting change.

Practice description

I offer a warm, confidential and non- judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at your own pace. My work is grounded in person-centred counselling, meaning I place great importance on building a trusting therapeutic relationship based on empathy, acceptance and respect. I believe that with the right support, people have an innate capacity for growth, healing and change .

Alongside this, I integrate Schema Therapy, which can be particularly helpful for understanding long- standing patterns that may be causing distress. Schemas are deeply held beliefs, or ways of relating to our selves and others that often develop early in life, together we can gently explore how these patterns may be affecting your emotions, relationships and choices in the present.

I aim to offer a safe and supportive environment where you feel heard, understood and valued, and where difficult experiences can be explored with care and compassion. I work in line with the BACP Ethical Framework and engage in regular supervision and ongoing professional development to ensure ethical and effective practice.

My first session

What to expect from counselling

our first session is an opportunity for you to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it. I will also explain how I work, discuss confidentiality and boundaries and answer any questions you may have. There is no pressure to commit beyond this session - it's important that you feel comfortable and that counselling feels right for you.

Using Schema Therapy, we may also look at recurring emotional themes or coping patterns, helping you to understand where they come from and how they show up in your life now. This can support deeper self-awareness, emotional healing, and the development of healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.

1.Free initial sample session ( 20 minutes )

I offer an initial sample of therapy, which gives you the opportunity to experience how it feels to work with me and to ask any questions you may have. This session is not a commitment to ongoing counselling and is designed to help you decide whether my approach feels right for you

2. Relational safety and depth

I offer a steady, relational approach where emotional safety and trust come first, particularly for people who have found previous support too superficial or rushed

3. I have a focus on long-standing patterns (Schema Therapy angle)

I work particularly well with people who notice recurring patterns in their relationships or emotional life and want to understand where these come from, not manage symptoms

4. Integrating warmth with structured depth

Alongside a person- centred foundation, I integrate elements of Schema Therapy to help bring clarity to deeply rooted beliefs and emotional patterns while always working with a pace that feels safe and collaborative.

5. Support for clients who struggle to access emotions

I have experience working with clients who find it hard to access or express emotions, and who may have learned to cope by staying strong, rational and self-reliant.

Availability

I am currently welcoming new supervisees for individual clinical supervision .

Supervision is available online, by telephone, or face-to face, with weekend morning and afternoon appointments available. Limited weekend appointments may also be available by arrangement.

If you are looking for a supervisor, you're welcome to get in touch to discuss your supervision needs, availability and whether we might be a good fit .

About me and my therapy practice

I'm Josephine, a BACP Accredited Psychotherapist and qualified Clinical Supervisor.

I offer supervision as a space to slow down, think deeply and make sense of the work- not simply to discuss what happened in the session or decide what intervention to use next.

I believe good supervision should be both supportive and stretching.  I want supervisees to be able to bring uncertainty, difficult cases, mistakes, strong emotional responses and moments of not knowing without fear of judgement, while also feeling thoughtfully challenged to consider what they may not yet be seeing.

My supervision is collaborative, reflective and relational. Alongside the client work itself, I'm interested in what is happening for you as a therapist: what you are noticing, what you are feeling, what you may be drawn towards or away from, and how your own experiences and responses might be influencing your work.

I work integratively, drawing on Humanistic and relational approaches, CBT, Schema Therapy, and Schema Mode therapy, and Internal Family Systems ( IFS) . This allows me to adapt supervision to your modality, clinical experience, and individual learning needs rather than taking a one- size -fits- all approach  .

I also believe that the supervisory relationship matters. we can explore how culture, difference and power may influence the therapeutic and supervisory space, and what you need from me, to feel respected, understood and able to think openly.

My aim is to offer a containing space where you can develop your clinical thinking, confidence and professional identity while maintaining a strong focus on ethical practice, client safety, safeguarding and sustainable ways of working

Practice description

I offer Clinical supervision to trainee and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, at different stages of their professional development.

My approach, is informed by the Seven - Eyed Model of supervision ( Hawkins & Shohet), which provides a useful framework for looking beyond the presenting client issue and exploring the different layers of the therapeutic work

Together we might explore :

  •   What is happening for the client
  • What is happening within the therapeutic relationship
  • How are you responding emotionally and clinically?
  • What interventions are you using and why?
  • Is there anything you may be avoiding, overlooking and finding difficult to name?
  • What might be happening between us in supervision ?
  •  How might culture, identity, power, ethics or the wider professional context be influencing the work ?

I also make space for the therapist behind the therapy.

Supervision isn't only about whether you are doing the right thing with the client; it is also about how you are experiencing the work and what it is like to hold it.

We may therefore explore questions such as :

What is it like for you to hold the client ?

What are you noticing in your self ?

Where do you feel confident, and where do you feel less certain ?

What might this client be bringing up for you ?

What do you need in order to continue working safely and sustainably

I aim to create a supervisory relationship that is warm, collaborative and appropriately challenging. I welcome honest reflection and uncertainty, and I don't expect supervisees to arrive with all the answers.

Supervision can be a place to develop clinical competence, but it can also be a place to develop confidence, professional identity and trust in your own clinical judgement .

I welcome supervisees from a range of therapeutic modalities and I am committed to  inclusive and ethically grounded practice.

My first session

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin creating a supervision relationship that feels useful and safe for you.

We will collaboratively develop a supervision contract, including what you need from supervision, how you prefer to receive feedback and how we will approach confidentiality, boundaries, safeguarding, risk and accountability.

I also want to understand you as a therapist ,rather than simply starting with a case

 we might explore:

  •   What brings you to supervision at this stage of your professional journey?
  • What are you hoping supervision will give you ?
  •  Where do you currently feel confident
  • what tends to unsettle or challenge you in your work clinically ?
  • How you do like to be supported and challenged ?
  • what would help you feel able to think openly in supervision ?
As our work develops, I like to consider the clinical, emotional, relational and ethical dimensions of your practice. we may think about the work through " the head, the heart and the hands "- your clinical thinking, your emotional experience and your therapeutic skills - alongside questions of ethics, boundaries, risk and self-care.

We will regularly review how supervision it's self is feeling for you.

I believe the supervisory relationship should be something we can talk about openly, including if something isn't working for you.
