About me and my therapy practice

I am based in central London (Bloomsbury with a second room in Camdem) and online.

I work short term or long term with any issue you bring to therapy.

Where there is anxiety or depression, these are very often an expression of something deeper. The therapy I offer is designed to address anxiety and depression at the level of these underlying issues. The same is true of some addictions (such as to sex, porn,  gaming and gambling).

I also specialise in in-depth work such as:

- distress about yourself, your identity or your place in the world

- difficulties or patterns that keep repeating in your relationships.

- working with adults abused or neglected in childhood

dissociation including depersonalisation, derealisation and dissociative identity disorder ('multiple personalities' or 'alters').

Please see my website julinecounselling.com for full details.

Therapist - Camden Town

Most of my appointments are between the hours of 12:00 and 21:00 on Mondays to Thursdays. The latest appointment is 20:00. I occasionally work outside of these hours.

About me and my therapy practice

My work is centred on a psychodynamic approach, with trauma-related and other models blended in as needed.

Psychodynamic therapy means exploring not only what is happening in your life now, but also how earlier experiences and relationships may continue to shape the way you feel, relate to others and understand yourself. It can involve paying attention to patterns, conflicts, expectations and emotional meanings that may have developed outside conscious awareness but continue to influence present experience, relationships and choices.

I work collaboratively rather than following a fixed programme. The pace and focus of the work are shaped by what you bring, what feels most important, and what can be approached safely and usefully at a particular time. Where trauma or dissociation are significant, I take particular care not to push for disclosure or exploration before it feels manageable. I may draw on trauma-related or other ways of working where they are useful, while keeping a psychodynamic understanding at the centre of the work.

The therapeutic relationship itself can also become an important part of therapy. Patterns that occur elsewhere in life can sometimes emerge within the relationship with the therapist and, when useful, can be thought about together. This can make previously automatic or difficult-to-recognise ways of relating more understandable.

Understanding often develops gradually through the work. Rather than imposing a fixed explanation, I try to remain curious about the different meanings of what you experience and how these may connect with your history, relationships and present circumstances. My aim is to work thoughtfully and steadily, with room both for reflection and for the practical realities of your life now.

Practice description

I offer psychotherapy to adults in Bloomsbury and Camden, central London, as well as online.

I work with a broad range of difficulties, with particular experience and interest in trauma, dissociation, the lasting effects of childhood abuse or neglect, and recurring emotional or relationship patterns. This includes dissociation across a wide range of severity, from relatively mild experiences through depersonalisation and derealisation to OSDD and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

You may be seeking therapy because of a clearly identifiable difficulty, or because something feels wrong, repetitive or hard to understand. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a clear explanation for what you are experiencing. Therapy can provide space to make sense of difficulties that may feel confusing, longstanding or hard to put into words.

I also work with difficulties involving identity, self-esteem, relationships, sexuality and gender, and with the effects of experiences that may have been minimised, compartmentalised or difficult to recognise as significant at the time. Sometimes the issue bringing you to therapy is quite specific; at other times several areas of life may feel connected or difficult in ways that are not yet clear.

Appointments are available in person in both Bloomsbury and Camden, subject to availability, and online for clients elsewhere in the UK.

If you are considering psychotherapy, an initial consultation or introductory session offers an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy, ask questions about how I work and consider whether working together feels appropriate. It is also a chance to think about what you are looking for from therapy before deciding whether you would like to continue.

My first session

To get started, you can choose between two options.

A FREE 25-minute video or phone consultation gives us an opportunity to talk briefly about what has brought you to therapy, what you are looking for, and any questions you may have about how I work. It can help us both consider whether it would make sense to arrange a full session.

Alternatively, you can book a 50-minute Introductory Session at a reduced rate. This can take place face to face in Bloomsbury or Camden, or online. It gives us more time to explore what has brought you to therapy and for you to experience what a full session with me is like.

There is no expectation that you decide in advance whether you want to continue with ongoing psychotherapy. If, after either option, it seems that working together may be helpful, we can discuss the next steps and possible ongoing arrangements.
