About me and my therapy practice
I am an experienced practitioner, trained to Masters level in both counselling/psychotherapy and coaching (EMCC accredited). I work from a humanistic, person-centred approach - the work is tailored to you and your way of thinking and engaging with ideas.
Prior to working together, we will talk about what has brought you and what you would like to focus on. We agree an initial emphasis, whether that is coaching or counselling, and there is flexibility to adjust this over time if that feels appropriate.
Practice description
In my work, both counselling and coaching involve attention to inner experience and to the wider contexts of people's lives. The difference is usually one of emphasis.
Counselling/Psychotherapy
In counselling, the focus is the inner, emotional experience and personal history. People often come feeling anxious, low or overwhelmed, affected by loss, difficult relationships or past experiences. Sessions provide a confidential, supportive space to explore feelings, patterns and ways of relating. The work supports greater self-awareness, resilience and a more compassionate relationship with yourself and others.
Coaching
In coaching the emphasis is more on context, roles, and present situations. People often come to explore complex decisions they are wrestling with, work and life balance, transitions, feedback at work or in personal relationships, or how they communicate and relate to others. The work supports clearer thinking, and more deliberate choices aligned with personal values.
Counselling sessions are typically held weekly and last 50 minutes, coaching sessions are usually monthly and last 90mins. The pace, frequency and format of the sessions are agreed together and can be adapted to your needs.
My first session
Before the first session, we will have spoken and agreed the nature of the work, including whether counselling, coaching, or a more integrated approach feels most appropriate. The first session is an opportunity to begin the work and to get a sense of how it feels to work together. There is no requirement to arrive with a clear agenda or to know exactly what you want to focus on.
The conversation in the first session is often slightly different in tone. I will typically ask more questions and spend time understanding what has brought you, how you are experiencing things at the moment, and the wider context of your life. This is a way of taking stock and beginning to orient ourselves in the work.
You are also welcome to ask questions and to use the session to get a sense of whether this feels like the right fit for you. There is no pressure to explore anything in depth before you are ready.
By the end of the session, we will usually have a clearer sense of how the work might begin and what feels like a helpful next step.
