About me and my therapy practice

I am passionate and very proud to be a therapist and never cease to feel honoured and humbled to work in this field. I mean that very genuinely, and I hope if we end up working together that you will witness and experience that for yourself.

The seeds of curiosity about “ what makes us who we are “ were planted from my teenage, trying to make sense of my own life and its complexities. Then came the times of having my own therapy and experiencing feeling really seen and held. I knew that when the time was right, this is what I wanted to train in and hoped I could offer the same experience to others.

Prior to training, as part of my own lived experiences, I became involved in supporting people affected by miscarriage and baby loss. I also worked for many years in the community helping support older people and those affected by cancer. All of this helped to give me broader insights into others and my own experiences of loss, grief, mortality , existentialism.

Here are a few comments made by clients which I hope will give you an insight into who you will meet:
“Thank you for loving the parts of me that I found hard to love”
“ .. for your mind and open heart, and willingness to go with me wherever I needed to travel to on this wild journey of mine”

Practice description

I have worked for the last two decades as an Accredited BACP Counsellor and Psychotherapist, and continue to train and gain new skills to help clients who have been traumatised in their lives, whether from recent events or from their past.

I trained as an Integrative therapist with the focus being on working in a Person- Centred way ( you lead, you are the expert), and with Psychodynamic theory informing my understanding and curiosity of whats going on in the session and outside the session. Curious about  what is said and sometimes not said; it’s all a reflection of our inner worlds. Gaining understanding of defences ( our protection), and why they have come about can be a very important part of self discovery and healing.

The early sessions can sometimes resemble a mixture of you bringing the immediacy of whats causing distress , letting it out, me holding it all in its disparate parts so that eventually the threads come together like a tapestry or mosaic. There will be a place to bring in coping strategies, learn grounding methods if appropriate, and bring in psycho education ( again, if appropriate).

We then move to a place where the healing can start, the insights can be integrated to allow new ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling. We don’t have to be stuck in the old ways.

Our endings are as, and possibly even more, important than our beginnings. Best practice is to work to the ending of therapy together, preparing for it and honouring it.
Many of my clients enjoy returning over the years with the knowledge that they are already known and understood .

I am also qualified in methods that can help with PTSD, and traumatic memories. One is an eye movement protocol called “EMI - Eye Movement Integration“, the other is “Tapping” also know as “Emotional Freedom Technique”. You can read more about these on my website.

My first session

I offer an initial free 15 / 20 telephone or video call to give us an opportunity to briefly touch on your reasons for wanting therapy and to ensure I have the skills required to meet your needs and we have mutual availability.

Our first assessment session is 60- 90 minutes ( depending on availability) ,a time for us to see if we connect together, for me to get a broader picture of what’s going on for you now, and sometimes to touch on your early history. Where appropriate, it can be a time for me to start giving ways and strategies to help overcome or lessen feelings of anxiety.
