About me and my therapy practice

Hello. My name is James Wilson and I am a CBT & ACT Therapist.

Do you close your eyes and hear thoughts such as "I'm weak", "Life's pointless", "People are going to judge me" or "Something bad is going to happen"? Do you feel a knot in your stomach or is your heart racing?

If so, the therapy I offer is designed to give you new tools for managing your relationship with those unwanted thoughts and feelings. Empowering you to choice how to respond can help you act in a way that is line with your values and improve your overall wellbeing.

Practice description

The therapy I offer has two important components:

  • Together we build an understanding of what is happening to create unhelpful, unhealthy or unworkable situations. We look at how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected.
For example, if you are avoiding social situations we consider what thoughts or feelings may lead to that behaviour and how avoiding other people is impacting your overall wellbeing and quality of life.

  • From there we start developing your tool kit to manage these situations. We begin by learning to "focus reset", enabling your conscious mind to be in charge. This is the pathway to developing increased levels self-compassion, which is vital to allow yourself to make positive change. We then give you tools for dealing with your unwanted thoughts and feelings in a variety of situations. Finally we help uncover your own values to guide your actions so you can pass your "mirror test" and proudly say that you live a life in line with your own values.

My first session

In the first session, we will begin by discussing your goals of therapy. This will be how you would like your life to be different at the end of the therapeutic process. What you would be doing, how you would like to be thinking.

From there we gather some of the background information to help understand how certain problems have developed in your life and how they are showing themselves in everyday situations.

We also consider how your unwanted thoughts or feelings are dictating how you are behaving in unhelpful and unhealthy ways. I will also introduce the model of therapy I use in more detail and answer any questions you might have.
