About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Rachel, and thank you for taking the time to visit my profile.
I understand that seeking support can feel like a significant step, and I aim to provide a warm, safe, and non-judgemental space where you can feel comfortable being yourself. Whether you are experiencing a specific difficulty or simply feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain, I will work alongside you with empathy, compassion, and respect.
As a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP), I draw on both person-centred principles and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches to tailor support to your individual needs. I believe that no two people are the same, and therapy should reflect your unique experiences, strengths, and goals.
I have extensive experience working within the NHS, voluntary sector, education, refugee services, criminal justice settings, and mental health teams. My counselling journey began with the Samaritans, where I spent three years supporting individuals experiencing emotional distress, trauma, bereavement, addiction, and suicidal thoughts. These experiences have shaped my belief in the importance of providing a compassionate and accepting therapeutic relationship where clients feel genuinely heard and understood.
I work with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, trauma, ADHD, autism, and life transitions.
I have a particular interest in supporting women through significant life changes, including perimenopause and menopause. Having developed and facilitated an NHS Menopause Support Group, I understand the emotional, physical, and psychological impact this stage of life can have.
Alongside my clinical work, I have provided clinical supervision within NHS Talking Therapies services. My work has included co-authoring an article for The Telegraph on controlling behaviour and contributing to initiatives that support emotional wellbeing and resilience.
Practice description
I offer a warm, supportive, and confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgement. My aim is to help you feel heard, understood, and empowered to make positive changes in your life.
I work in a collaborative way, recognising that every person is unique. Together, we will explore the difficulties that have brought you to counselling, identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and work towards goals that feel meaningful and achievable for you.
My approach is primarily person-centred, meaning I believe you are the expert in your own life. Alongside this, I draw upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques where appropriate, helping you to understand the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and to develop practical strategies for managing challenges more effectively.
I work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, bereavement, relationship issues, trauma, ADHD, autism, life transitions, and women's wellbeing concerns, including menopause and perimenopause.
Sessions are tailored to your individual needs and can be either short-term, focusing on a specific issue, or longer-term, allowing for deeper exploration and personal growth. I work at a pace that feels comfortable for you and believe that building a trusting therapeutic relationship is central to meaningful change.
Clients often tell me they value my warm, down-to-earth approach and my ability to combine empathy and understanding with practical tools and strategies gained through my experience as a counsellor and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner.
Whether you are seeking support during a difficult period, looking to better understand yourself, or hoping to make lasting changes in your life, I welcome the opportunity to work alongside you.
My first session
I understand that attending a first counselling session can feel daunting, particularly if you have never accessed therapy before. My aim is to help you feel comfortable, supported, and able to talk at a pace that feels right for you.
During our first session, we will explore what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with, and what you hope to gain from therapy. I will also ask some questions about your background, current circumstances, and emotional wellbeing to help me understand your needs and ensure that I am the right therapist for you.
This initial session is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the counselling process and to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. Finding the right therapist is important, and there is no obligation to continue if you feel another approach may be more suitable.
Where appropriate, I may use a brief assessment or questionnaires to help establish a starting point and to monitor progress throughout our work together.
Sessions are confidential, and I will explain confidentiality and its limits during our first meeting.
Following the initial session, we can discuss whether short-term or longer-term counselling would best meet your needs and agree how we will work together moving forward.
I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation to discuss your needs, answer any questions, and help you decide whether I am the right therapist for you
