About me and my therapy practice

Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

I work in a pluralistic and flexible way, tailoring therapy to your individual needs. Drawing from Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural, Strengths-Based and Compassion-Focused approaches, I adapt our sessions to what feels most helpful for you.

This may involve exploring past experiences, understanding present challenges, recognising patterns or developing practical coping strategies. Our work will depend on your needs and what you hope to gain from therapy.

I believe therapy is a collaborative process. You are the expert in your own experience, while my role is to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can feel heard, understood and supported. We will work at a pace that feels right for you and adapt our work as needed.

I have particular experience supporting women who have experienced narcissistic abuse, coercive control and emotionally or physically abusive relationships. These experiences can leave you questioning yourself, your perceptions and decisions, affecting confidence, identity and your ability to trust your own judgement.

Therapy can provide space to make sense of what has happened, understand relationship patterns and reconnect with yourself. Together, we can work towards rebuilding self-trust, self-compassion and recognising your needs.

I work in a trauma-informed and neuro-affirmative way, recognising that everyone responds differently. Rather than expecting you to fit a particular model, we will find an approach that fits you.

My aim is to help you develop greater clarity, confidence and self-understanding, while supporting meaningful change. Therapy can be a space to reconnect with who you are, rebuild trust in yourself and move towards healthier, more authentic relationships and a life that feels right for you.

Practice description

I offer a warm, compassionate and confidential space where you can talk openly about what is happening and feel heard and understood.

I am a neuro-affirmative counsellor working with adults experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, self-doubt and feeling stuck or overwhelmed. I recognise that everyone experiences and makes sense of the world differently, and I aim to understand you as an individual rather than expecting you to fit a mould.

I have an interest in supporting women who have experienced narcissistic abuse, coercive control and difficult or abusive relationships.

You may be struggling to understand your emotions, feeling disconnected from yourself or unsure of what you need. Sometimes you may know that something needs to change but not know where to begin. Counselling can provide space to pause, reflect and understand your experiences.

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting. There is no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what you need or want to talk about. In our first session, you can share what has brought you to therapy at your own pace, and together we can explore what you would like from our work.

I offer an inclusive space where you can be yourself without judgement. You will be listened to with compassion and respect, and we will work together to explore what may help you move forward.

In addition, I am a clinical supervisor, supporting therapists with professional development, reflective practice and client work. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

Whether you are seeking support through a particular difficulty, recovering from a challenging relationship, or simply want to understand yourself more deeply, therapy can help you develop greater clarity, self-awareness, confidence and resilience.

My first session

Your first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other and for you to share what has brought you to counselling. You do not need to have everything worked out beforehand, and there is no pressure to talk about anything before you feel ready.

We will explore what you are experiencing, what you would like support with and what you hope to gain from counselling. I may ask some questions to help me understand your circumstances and what you need, but the session will be guided by you and your priorities.

My aim is for you to feel listened to, understood and comfortable enough to begin talking openly. We can discuss what you would like from therapy and consider how we might work together, including the approach and pace that feels right for you.

I offer a free initial telephone or online consultation, giving you the opportunity to ask questions, talk briefly about what you are looking for and get a sense of whether I might be the right counsellor for you before arranging your first full session.

There is no expectation that you commit to a particular number of sessions. Everyone's circumstances and needs are different, so we can review our work together regularly and decide what feels appropriate as we go.

About me and my therapy practice

I'm Janet Liberato, an Accredited Member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society and a Member of the BACP.

I have worked as a counsellor for almost 10 years, and before that my career was with organisations including Barnardo's and Women's Aid.

As a qualified Clinical Supervisor, I trained across the main supervision models rather than working from a single approach, and I draw on Hawkins & Shohet's Seven-Eyed Process Model, Proctor & Inskipp's Functions Model, and the FORUM/CARER frameworks developed for online supervision, depending on what each session calls for. This might mean looking closely at the client work itself, at the dynamic between supervisee and client, or at what the work is bringing up for you as the practitioner.

I work exclusively online, so location is not a barrier to working together.

I see supervision as a professional relationship built on honesty and trust. I aim to be direct as well as supportive, and to offer challenge where it is useful rather than only reassurance. I am also mindful of the wider dynamics within the supervisory relationship itself, including power and difference, as these shape what a supervisee is able to bring and get from the work.

Ethical practice is central to how I work, and I approach dilemmas through careful, structured reflection rather than quick resolution. I also use established reflective models, including Kolb's and Gibbs' cycles, to support supervisees in developing their own capacity for reflective practice, alongside my input.

Practice description

Sessions are held online on a monthly basis.

A 60-minute session is £70.00, and a 90-minute session is £90.00.

We begin by agreeing a working contract, covering confidentiality, safeguarding, note-keeping, GDPR and the Caldicott principles, the frequency and length of sessions, and how we would approach any pause, ending or complaint. This is not fixed; we revisit and adjust it as your practice develops.

In sessions, we work through your client material, but the focus is not limited to the case itself. I am equally interested in the relationship between you and the client, what the work may be evoking in you, and any patterns that can be harder to see from within the work. I move between different supervision models depending on what is most useful in a given session, rather than following a single fixed structure.

I am  attentive to power dynamics and difference within our own working relationship, not only within the client work under discussion.

Notes are kept securely and in confidence. If supervision is no longer meeting your needs, or something in the working relationship is not right, I would rather address this openly with you than let it continue unaddressed, including supporting you to find an alternative supervisor if appropriate.

My first session

The first session is primarily focused on establishing our working contract. This covers confidentiality and its limits, safeguarding, note-keeping, GDPR, the frequency and length of future sessions, and how we would handle any pause, ending or complaint should the need arise.

I am keen to understand more about you: your training and theoretical orientation, your current client group and caseload, your areas of experience, and anything specific you need from supervision. Equally, this is your opportunity to ask about my background, my way of working, and the models I draw on, so that you can decide whether we are a good match before committing to ongoing supervision.

I do not treat the first session as an assessment of you, and there is nothing you need to prepare in advance. By the end of it, we should both have a clear sense of how we will work together, with the working agreement in place as a document we can return to and amend as your practice develops.
