About me and my therapy practice
I’m probably not the counsellor for you. Not if you are looking for someone who listens to your stories without interruption, agrees with you that life has dealt you a rotten hand, and then hopes that you feel better for getting it off your chest. That’s not how I work.
Sure, I’ll listen to what’s going on for you. I believe in the power of telling your story out loud, and having it reflected back to you, so there’ll be a fair bit of that. I won’t judge you. But I’ll also be asking you some uncomfortable questions. Challenging you. Offering you some alternative ways of thinking and behaving. Identifying patterns of behaviour, setting some new goals, measuring your progress, noticing and celebrating subtle changes in your feelings, thoughts and behaviour.
The way I see it is, if you could have sorted it yourself, with self-help books, podcasts, and the support of friends and family, you wouldn’t be coming to me. So I need to be offering you something different. The bit that hasn’t occurred to you, or the techniques you’re not aware of. Making links between what’s going on for you now, and what happened in the past. Helping you design what you want your future to look like, who you want to be, or at least which direction to travel. Does that sound a bit too much like hard work? That’s because it kind of is. But I’ll get you where you want to be via the fastest, easiest route.
So have a think. And if this hasn’t scared you off, or if you have any questions, then get in touch . I offer counselling and coaching, or a blend of both to suit your needs. I offer a free, no obligation initial consultation to see if we’re a good fit. As I said, I’m not everyone’s cup of tea.
Practice description
I’m an ‘Integrative’ therapist. That means I use many different therapeutic approaches and tools and will use the one which best suits you, depending on what you want to examine, your learning styles and your own personal preference.
You may find creative interventions, such as visualisation or miniature work, to be particularly helpful, or maybe the thought of that brings you out in a cold sweat. No worries, we can stick to talking!
I’m also ‘Person-centred’ in my approach (also called ‘Client-centred’ or ‘Rogerian’). This means I’ll work alongside you, rather than telling you what to do. That’s different from never challenging you. There’ll be a fair amount of difficult questions, but only when it’s in your best interest … I don’t just ask tricky questions for the sake of it!
One more ‘label’ for who I am and how I work … I’m broadly ‘Existential’ in my approach. I mention this because this sets the tone for everything I do. Whilst I believe what’s happened in the past has implications and influences, I don’t think it’s helpful to blame the past. I certainly don’t think we are defined by our past. So I look to the past for clues and insight, but ultimately I believe in our power to make choices, take action and design our own reality.
I’ve done the training and read the books, so you don’t have to. I won’t keep the knowledge to myself, like a secret recipe. I’ll explain it to you, signpost you to further information if you want to research on your own (or not! no pressure!) and offer some areas for you to work on in between our sessions (or not! your choice.)
Perhaps you don’t feel as though counselling is for you, but yet you want to make some changes, are feeling stuck or unfulfilled. Maybe more of a coaching approach appeals? We can do that. Or both!

My first session
I think it’s a good idea to have a free video call, before we arrange our first session. I work via Zoom, Skype or WhatsApp video. At this meeting I can answer any questions you might have and we can discuss how we might work together. It is important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor/coach, so this meeting gives an opportunity for you to check that I’m the right one for you. Also … and this may seem a bit strange … but if I don’t think my approach is best suited to you, then I’ll say so. I can’t possibly be the best fit for everyone, so I’ll say if I think you’d be better off looking for someone with a different approach. And I’ll signpost you in the right direction, where I can. What I can help with
