About me and my therapy practice

As an Integrative Psychotherapist, I am able to combine elements from several therapeutic models to ensure that the help I provide is tailored to your unique needs. I do not believe therapy is a ‘one size fits all’ process; instead, I aim to understand you as an individual and adapt my approach to your experiences, circumstances and the difficulties you may be facing.

My approach aligns very well with the spirit of what Jung believed: “Learn your theories as well as you can, but put them aside when you touch the miracle of the living soul.” For me, this reflects the importance of having a sound theoretical and clinical foundation whilst remaining open, curious and responsive to you as a person. The therapeutic relationship is central to my work, and I aim to offer you a safe, respectful and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, relationships and experiences at your own pace.

I draw upon a range of approaches, including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, solution-focused and creative therapies, selecting and integrating elements according to what may be most helpful for you. As an Art Psychotherapist, I can also incorporate art and other creative or expressive approaches if these feel right for you. You do not need to be ‘good at art’; creative approaches can simply provide another way of expressing and exploring experiences that may be difficult to put into words.

With many years of experience working with both adults and younger people, I understand the importance of adapting therapy to your stage of life, circumstances and individual needs. I see therapy as a collaborative process: we work together to develop greater understanding, make sense of your experiences, identify meaningful ways forward and support change.

Practice description

I am an experienced Integrative Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Art Therapist with over 36 years’ experience supporting children, adolescents, adults and older people. I offer an empathic, non-judgemental and collaborative approach, recognising that each person’s experiences and needs are unique.

My work draws on a range of therapeutic approaches, including integrative psychotherapy, art therapy, psychodynamic therapy, CBT, solution-focused approaches, play therapy and sand tray work. Where appropriate, creative and expressive methods can provide an alternative way of exploring feelings and experiences when words alone may feel difficult.

Throughout my career I have worked with a wide range of mental health and emotional difficulties, including anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, grief, attachment and relational difficulties, developmental difficulties and complex mental health needs. I have particular experience working therapeutically with children and young people, including those with autism and communication or developmental difficulties, as well as with adults experiencing trauma and PTSD.

I also have extensive experience working with military veterans and have provided individual and group art psychotherapy within a specialist trauma service. My practice is informed by a strong understanding of trauma and the importance of creating a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship.

Since 2019 I have worked in both face-to-face and remote settings, providing flexibility according to individual circumstances. My aim is to offer a confidential and supportive space where clients can feel heard, understood and able to explore difficulties at their own pace.

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, begin to understand what has brought you to therapy and talk about what you hope to gain from counselling or psychotherapy. As an Integrative Psychotherapist and Art Psychotherapist, I can draw on both talking and creative approaches, depending on your needs and what feels comfortable for you.

During our first session, I will invite you to complete a brief intake form and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), a questionnaire that helps us understand the presence and severity of depressive symptoms. This is not a diagnosis, but one of several tools that can help inform our understanding of how you are feeling.

I will also provide information about informed consent and GDPR. Informed consent means that we will discuss how therapy works, including confidentiality, boundaries and your rights, so that you can make an informed choice about taking part in therapy. GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) relates to how your personal information is collected, stored and used, and helps ensure that your data is handled securely and respectfully.

There is no expectation that you will be able to explain everything straight away. We can take time to explore what is happening for you at a pace that feels manageable. The first session is also a chance for you to ask questions and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.
