About me and my therapy practice

Hi and Welcome to Marble White Counselling.

I am working face-to-face at Denmead Community Centre in Waterlooville. Face-to-face sessions in a setting other than your home can provide a neutral space, so clients' can switch off from their home environment. This can create cleaner boundaries, helping you to focus solely on your counselling experience. Thus, offering optimum conditions for a stronger therapeutic alliance.

Face-to-face home visits in the Waterlooville/Cosham areas are available. Home visits have the advantages of increased accessibility to counselling, which can be particularly helpful for those with mobility concerns, illnesses and issues with transportation.

Home visits can decrease any stigma surrounding attendance or being seen entering the counsellor's office. It can help clients' feel less anxious and more secure; thereby increasing the depth of the therapeutic relationship.

I also work online and via the telephone. Research by Batastini et al. (2001) shows that counselling online is just as effective as face-to-face counselling. Due to age limits on video platforms, face-to-face appointments and home visits for children under 13 in the Waterlooville and Cosham areas are required.

Counselling online and via the telephone has the benefits of accessing therapy in the comfort of your own home. There is no travel, no parking and clients have a range of different mediums to choose from, so they can decide which one is best for them.

Online counselling can be via WhatsApp Video Call or Psychology Today Video Platform.

Give me a call on 07716 124 328 or email angelahughes40@outlook.com to book an appointment.

Practice description

Sessions are fifty minutes long for counselling. As well as working with Adults, Couples and Families, I am qualified and experienced in working with young people/children (from five years). I have been employed as a school counsellor, a young persons' counsellor and a primary school teacher.

Although my core approach is Humanistic, integrating Person-Centred counselling, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt Therapy depending on the needs of the client, I also work in a Solution-Focused way. This means I offer a safe and confidential environment where I am empathic, non-judgemental and genuine. I will support you through your journey by being alongside you and listen attentively in order to understand and hear your experience.

Throughout our relationship (which I believe is key to successful therapy), you will learn more about yourself and be able to identify any obstacles that are preventing you from reaching your full potential. I will support you to draw upon your own coping strategies. This is hugely empowering and will enable you to find a way forward.

In addition to the 'talking therapy' (if requested by you) creative methods can be used such as art materials, puppets and stones. These stimuli make it easier to communicate deep issues, fears and worries. They provide a medium through which ideas and feelings can be expressed freely.

Specialist areas include Neurodiversity, Relationship Difficulties, Depression, Bereavement, Eating Disorders, Addiction and Abuse.

During our first session, I will offer you the opportunity to tell me what brings you to counselling, so we can both decide whether I am the right therapist for you.

About me and my therapy practice

My core therapeutic approach is Humanistic (Person-Centred, Gestalt & Transactional Analysis); however, I also work in a Solution Focused way too. I will model these values throughout the supervisory relationship and I offer a safe and confidential environment where I am empathic, non-judgmental and congruent. I will listen attentively and value you positively as a person.

Although my core supervision style is Humanistic, my training has qualified me to supervise both individuals and groups from other orientations; therefore, I am able to translate theoretical language and concepts across models.

Transference and Counter-transference will be worked with and although primarily psychodynamic in its origin, parallel/unconscious processes are essential skills for supervisors of any theoretical approach. Avoidance or failure to identify these could be detrimental to the working alliance and supervision work (Raffles, 2012).

My commitment to any supervisee is at the heart of my work. I do not simply mean I will attend our scheduled sessions, I will be prepared to work for the health of our relationship, which includes addressing any difficulties and being open to any challenges a supervisee may bring.

My philosophy of counselling, which is mirrored in the supervisory relationship, echoes that of Rogers. I believe humans have an inborn ability to achieve their potential (actualising tendency) given the right conditions. I think people are genuinely ‘ok’ and ultimately trust the client/supervisee to know what is best for them.
